Super socket 7 motherboard EPOX EP-58MVP3C-M with MMX 233 Pentium and a 2X agp slot . Had a voodoo3 3000 for some time , but I placed it on Pentium III system . What would be a good choice for a AGP card ? . Before reach the bottleneck point but use the maximum of cpu's potential .Dos - win98 gaming . I have few agp cards a Riva TNT2 M64 32MB , Geforce2 MX400 , a Matrox with dual vga (think G400 or G450) ,and FX5200 , ati 9200 but these I supose are too much for a pentium 1 . Is anything good enough from what I got or to look for something else ?

…and take an « early » driver if you go this route, ithas better compatibility with older hardware than the latest driver you can get for this card. There are numerous threads about that here, but I don’t remember the version usually suggested.

Searching a Nexgen Nx586 with FPU, PM me if you have one. I have some Athlon MP systems and cookies.

For agp compatibility purpose (which is flaky on ss7 chipsets) and dos compatibility go for the geforce2 mx400, it's more than powerful for such cpu, not period correct but it your best bet.

Won't drivers for that card really slow down socket 7?

With the performance of a 233MHz Pentium MMX, AGP vs PCI won't change anything for a video card and, as others have mentionned, cards significantly newer than that CPU will likely give similar or even worse performance than older cards because the newer cards will have drivers with more CPU overhead, which a Pentium MMX will struggle with.

The Geforce 2MX, used with early drivers is probably as recent as is worth trying. My hunch is that a Voodoo 3 (maybe even a Voodoo 2) or a TNT will probably get you the best possible results with that CPU.

Even a Voodoo 2 at 640x480 is severely bottlenecked by a Pentium MMX. 3Dfx Voodoo 2 Super Socket 7 CPU Scaling @ 640 x 480

Some tests on a faster CPU What is the best graphics card for Super Socket 7? My journey :D

There was another testing thread where a Rage 128 went surprisingly well, making it a good budget friendly option for price/availability. Can't find that one at the moment.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Banshee or any of the Voodoo3 cards (including V3 1000 8MB) would be great too. Of course prices are nuts these days.

The issues with NVidia cards are many have blurry VGA, if they have a fan it probably needs to be replaced, and they don't get you Glide and that is unfortunate for early 3D games.

According to my tests (they were made with ss7 cpus though) the best drivers to use are 5.32 or 8.05. That being said the user will look for a tnt 2 or m64 I personally had compatibility issues with it, either way good luck and have fun...

It’s not impossible to get a radeon 9800 pro working on such systems, but it’s not common.

Radeon 9250/7500/ good chance of working.

9700 may work, haven’t tried though

A lot of people have had good luck with quadro 2 cards running 7.76 driver. I myself haven’t had much luck though.

I'm running a Radeon 9200/9250, but you need the Catalyst drivers version 5.5/5.6 maximum otherwise you start having issues with SSE needed. I'm having good luck with these cards.

In what system you have the card ? Dos compatibility ?

Sure. It's essentially the same product as a TNT2 M64 but with somewhat lower clock speeds. They should be cooler / lower power than a TNT2 M64.
