I have a little ITX 98/XP gaming box I like to bring to LAN parties because it's convenient. The Intel 945 chipset works well with 1000Hz polling once Windows is running but starting the machine with the mouse plugged in causes Windows 98 to load to a black screen and freeze.

Does anyone have any luck booting with higher polling rates? Both 500 and 1000hz polling cause the same issue.

Wouldn't it be possible to set polling rate to the desired value manually only after the machine has started ?

With the Deathadder I can switch between 1000 to 8000hz with a button. But it needs software that only runs under Windows 7/11 to change to anything lower.

I might have to resort to simply plugging to in after the fact.

If a software solution isn't possible or feasible, a USB hub with a per-port physical ON/OFF switch might be an option.
