Hot air rework station is one of those 858B clones.

Those Engrish translations. 😅 高级 means "high quality" instead of "senior(ity)" here, and it's quite common for Chinese companies using lower case "c" in "Made in china."

Heh, some senior translation work there then. 🤣

Panik!

Cooler box doesn't mention AM3(+) ... cooler instructions don't mention AM3(+)... Y U lie to me Bezos? They drop older AMD support in revision?

Phew, okay, it uses the AMD hole pattern and just the "AMD" with nothing beside it is meant to imply all the sockets from 754 up that have been using that style.

I legit forgot that they had 1TB models. I'm just so used to using my router as a Time Capsule.

Finally upgraded from an RX480 after using it for 6+ years. I've been using computers since 1987 and I don't think I've used any single piece of hardware for more than 6 years before.. The RX480 8GB was a GODSEND at the time.

Anyway, I bought an RX 6700XT. These cards are selling at really good prices now that miners are decommissioning eth mining rigs. I got mine for less than $300 and it is invoiced only 4 months ago, basically brand new. Fuck miners.

Picked up the PIII-S of LGA2011 today: a Xeon E5-1680 v2. Got it from a guy who was selling a bunch of his old Mac gear because the latest OS wouldn't run on it. What is it, Venturi? Ventura? Nine out of ten pet detectives recommend it?

Anyway, really nice (and knowledgeable!) fellow. I even learned that the 1680v2 was an Apple exclusive part (for the Trashcan computer). But what really makes this 8c/16t CPU special is the unlocked multiplier. Guess Intel thought that Mac owners would never sell their old processors to PC users eager to overclock the snot out of them.

So I strapped the CPU into my Asus X79 motherboard's socket, fired it up without even updating the BIOS, and was a little surprised to see the motherboard correctly identify it! The board POSTed and even kept most of the settings I had been using with my previous i7-4930K CPU. The only thing that needed to be adjusted, understandably, was the multiplier. Wingo!

This CPU appears to be made of grade A silicon. Using the 125MHz base strap, it hit a stable 4.25GHz at just 1.1 volts. 4.375GHz was doable @ 1.14v, and it eagerly sailed on up to 4.5GHz at a nice and cool 1.19v. 4.625GHz required a significantly warmer 1.27v, so I just left it at 4.5GHz/1.19v. The memory controller had no problem training my recently acquired DDR3-2666 kit, though my old 4930K was also fine at that memory speed.

16 threads of 4.5GHz Ivy Bridge-EP power backed by a mammoth 25MB cache and quad-channel memory subsystem still feels nice and nimble in most apps. In fact, until I fired up RPCS3 and MS Flight Simulator, I had a difficult time telling it apart from my Ryzen 5900X! Will try out a few more modern games later.

Found this dell precision 7530 at ewaste, works fine other than missing battery and faulty CPU fan. Paid about C$50 for it.

It's an i9 8950HK with 8GB RAM, Radeon Pro WX 4150 graphics and a 1080p screen.

Nice, that would have been worth the pickup even if the screen and keyboard was broken and you needed to connect externals.

Grabbed this Thinksystem ST550 for $200 off Marketplace. Really had no choice, even though it was a 107km drive.

A close friend generously bought me a LG 27UK650_600, so I finally have a 4K (3840x2160) desktop resolution.

Unsurprisingly the Iris Pro 580 on this NUC can run games at 4K, but the caveat is they cannot be Unity Engine games.

Scored a couple of Hauppage HVR-1250 ATSC tuners to add to my eternally planning but eternally distracted from building TV snarfer/streamer/server build. Probably will use Plex.

Only problem is that I've now got 4 digital tuners that use PCIe 1x and boards that will let me use a max of 3... I am wondering if those PCIe 4x four lane to 4 times 1 lane risers will work. Or whether they're the same as the 1x riser/splitters and it will be all choppy with multiplexing and give me driver issues.

Ideally I'd just go for a quad tuner but I ain't paying hundreds for one, and cheap deals keep slipping out my fingers like a greased marble.

Maybe three will be enough though, there is another device which allows "live" feed over network, so I can just use all of them for recording.
