FileFront is a computer game and video game download service that provides patches, demos, modifications and other user generated game related content. It was first launched in December 2001, and created by I/O Error Development. The site currently holds about 90 terabytes of storage space.[1]

Anyone up for backing up 90 terabytes in 5 days?

Popular mirror and download site FileFront today revealed that it will "indefinitely suspend" site operations on March 30, 2009 due to current economic conditions. The sited urged users to download and archive any files they may want before that date.

While owner Ziff Davis recently sold the bulk of its video game-related sites, which also resulted in the closure of print magazine EGM, buyer UGO was reportedly uninterested in FileFront. The site continued operations as part of Ziff's PCMag Digital Network.

Wow.. An awful lot of mods for games are hosted by that site. This will be a bit of a disaster.

Is there a chance that Filefront's downloadable content (such as users' mods) will be obtainable via websites such as archive.org, albeit in x number of months/years time?

I've usually had issues with archive.org when trying to retrieve files. 9/10 I've had issues...... and I doubt that FileFront would allow it's files to be mirrored to archive.org.

Filefront was the only source of many mods, utilities, patches, levels, etc of some older games, and these files werent available anywhere else on the web. Maybe there should be some sort of effort like the one launched for HotU to mirror their content for historical purposes. All their files cant just go up in smoke. 🙁

These guys archive sites that are about to go dead:
http://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Deathwatch

Filefront.com is closing up shop [10]. The site will be suspended on March 30, 2009. 1.5 Million files and 48+ TB of space gone just like that.

But FileFront only notified people 5 days before they are going to shut down and they have ALOT of data.....far more than Jason Scott has room for I imagine.

So yeah archive.org is the only real candidate considering the big upgrade in storage space they just got. Mabye filefront can ship their hard drives off to them? heh.....and how would that benefit filefront?

They offer, what, 30MB per user? No great loss there. (Rather surprised it didn't happen much, much sooner.)

Yeah this can't be good. This is where I got my ATF patches, legacy benchmarking apps, and old 4in1's.

FileFront has been acquired by the original founders of the site and will NOT be suspended as previously announced. This is NOT an April Fool's Joke.

After learning about Ziff Davis Media's plan to shut down FileFront at the end of March, the original founders of FileFront made the decision to buy it back from Ziff Davis Media.

We're happy to announce to the gaming community that as of today, April 1st, 2009, FileFront is a completely independent company again and is no longer part of Ziff Davis Media. All previously suspended services should be active and working again. We thank Ziff Davis Media for their cooperation and willingness to keep the site and community alive.

Due to the very unfortunate timing of this event and related announcements on March 24th and April 1st (April Fool's Day), we'd like to make it perfectly clear that:

1) The March 24th announcement about FileFront shutting down was NOT an early April Fool's joke and Ziff Davis Media had every intention of shutting down FileFront by the end of March.

2) This announcement about the original founders buying back FileFront from Ziff Davis Media is also NOT an April Fool's joke.

3) We're making this announcement on April 1st because the deal was completed today and we want to bring all services back online immediately.

4) We would NEVER shut down FileFront as an April Fool's joke.

5) We are happy to be back!

FileFront has existed in one form or another (originally as FileLeech and Voodoo Extreme's downloads) since 1997. In the last 12 years, FileFront has become the gaming community's most comprehensive and trafficked library hosting millions of files for thousands of games while requiring no registration and providing uncapped download speeds. We look forward to improving FileFront and serving the gaming community for years to come.

Welcome home. Game On!

Are the download speeds the same as with the older filefront?
