Gotta love this. Happens once in a while.
I see a local ad for some old computer equipment and I buy what is advertised (usually at very low prices as they view it close to junk). In the meantime I ask if they have anything else of old computer equipment laying around (you never know 😉.
A guy had a 5 1/4" drive laying around and he originally wanted to include it for free with the advertised item after I asked if he had other old stuff. While he did sell the advertised item for his asking price he wanted 50 dollars for the drive alone after changing his mind. His reasoning? He said that was the prices he saw on Ebay...
While true that some person without any patience have been buying drives for 50 dollars, that is not the norm, and from Ebay Germany (which is the cheapest with shipping for me) the "normal" selling price is even lower than on Ebay.com (both my 5 1/4" drives bought for couple of euros + shipping).
I told him those are not the prices they are actually selling for and gave him a reasonable offer, but to no availability. I saw him put up an ad for the drive later on, along with other "Ebay priced" hardware, but nobody bought it.
My nightmare is that this one time I find something really interesting locally, like a special motherboard, the seller will go on Ebay and find something like this;
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Acer-AP5C-Vintage-Soc … =item3a8a017c90
and think that is the normal asking price...
