My CD is rather scratched, could anybody supply me the SHA1 sums of these retail disc files? Thanks.

Super paranoid about this, here's some SHA512 hashes:

Compared to my UK budget re-release CD, they look fine.

If the data track is Mode 1, and you don't get any read errors copying the files, I believe they're nearly 100% guaranteed to be OK due to the CRC checks.

Yeah I think it is. It's also shocking this CD is just 17 MB total size. What a waste of a CD-ROM.

EDIT: My files seemed to patch okay with the patch provided by DXX-ReBirth. Thank you for the reply!

Don't forget the game originally shipped on 6(?) floppies. 😀 I'm wondering where the extra ~8MB on your CD came from!
I wish they'd included the music remixes by Allistair Brimble from the Playstation version on the DOS D1 CD ... but if you're running Rebirth you can download them and use them in-game. Highly recommended.

I'm using the OPL3 recordings for music.

Also there really isn't much on the disc, there is a .PCX file of a photograph of the dev team though and a few other miscellaneous files that I'm not sure of. The default high score "Words of Wisdom" advertises a "CD Enhanced Version Coming Soon!"... I guess this never happened?

Descent II happened. If there's any CD enhanced Descent version it's the Mac and PlayStation releases.

Dunno about the PlayStation release, but OH YES, the Mac version of the original Descent blows the DOS version out of the water! :O

The Mac version has remixed CD Audio music of several of the original MIDI tunes, many (though not all) of which sound awesome, the graphics are updated for high resolution and tend to run better than the high-res modes in the original Descent, not to mention there's a high-res cockpit to go with it, which either the Descent 2 cockpit served as the template for or was based off of... I think the only drawback is that the system requirements are technically steeper than the original Descent, seeing as the Macs don't have low resolution graphics modes, so instead, if you have a lesser-powered Mac there's a "Pixel Doubling" mode for the rendering, which is faster than the normal rendering for sure but not nearly as fast as low-res on a DOS machine. :B

For some reason I thought that the CD Audio tracks were included with the DOS CD version as well...

As for the high-res version, at least D1X-Rebirth supports Mac game data, although some stuff like sound does not work for whatever reason. I wonder if the sound effects are of higher quality in the Mac version?

Assuming I don't find my backed up installed copy of Descent 2 I might request the SHA1's of Descent 2 and Vertigo Series files to compare against my scratched CD.

Nope. :(

The last patch for the DOS version of Descent added high resolution support, but without any special cockpits or anything, and it didn't support VESA 2.0 and was poorly optimized so it performed much worse than the high resolution support in Descent 2. :P

It was probably compressed on the floppies.
