Hi,

I am BinaryDemon and I've been working on DOSBox Distro - a marriage of Tinycore Linux and DOSBox. There's still a lot of room for improvement but I'd like to get some feedback. I figured the best way to do that would be to giveaway some known compatible hardware with DOSBox pre-installed so people could at least try it as I intended. So lets do this!

What I'm giving away:

(Small and Fanless - Internet Picture to demonstrate scale, not actual item, also stand at base not included.)
5400-series.jpg

Quanitity 15 (1 per person) - (13 mailed, waiting on PM reply from 1 person)

10Zig 56xx Thin Client
CPU: Atom n270 1.6ghz 1c/2t
MEM: 2gb 533mhz DDR2 Sodimm
STORAGE: 4gb IDE DOM
GPU: Intel 945GSE Integrated Graphics (DVI output)
IO: Network 10/100/1000 Ethernet
4 x USB2.0
PS/2 Keyboard
+ Power adapter
OS: DOSBox Distro Beta
(Some more hardware details if interested: https://www.parkytowers.me.uk/thin/10zig/rbt616/)

What you will need to use this:

-A display capable of 1024x768 + cables or adapters to connect to DVI ouput
-USB keyboard + mouse (I have not tested PS/2 keyboard support)
- 3.5mm audio cable + speakers (sound will play thru onboard pc speaker, but volume is very low)
- It is highly suggested you have access to a wired lan connection, to use many of the features.
- The willingness to try a few dos based games, and report back to this thread with your experiences!

Who is eligible:

- Must have a mailing address within the 48 contiguous United States
- Must be a Vogons.org Forum Member whose join date is prior to this posting

(Sorry for the location based restriction, I’m a generous person but costs start to rise when mailing packages outside of the country.)

Interested? Here is what do you do:

-Meet the two requirements above, and reply to this thread, before all 15 are claimed. I’ll contact you and ask for your name and mailing address thru forum private message.

So that’s it- Lucky recipients please take DOSBox Distro for a spin and report back. I’d like to hear all types of feedback and bug reports. Ultimately the hardware is yours to do with as you please, I wont be offended if you end up installing a different OS and using it for some other project.

Thanks for your interest!

I couldnt tell by specs but visually it looks like dvi-i (dual link).
The OS is the same version I currently have on my https://sites.google.com/site/dosboxdistro/ - Direct link to download - https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1sqje_1NdJKWiQ … export=download
But there are lots of compatibility issues, like Tinycore seems to do a poor job of picking the correct audio device when hdmi is in the mix. Usually the most compatible systems are all Intel based. Although I've also seen good results with HP T510 thin clients (Via Nano X2 based). If you do try it and have success, let me know what hardware you are running on. I'd like to start developing a Known Good compatibility list.

-A display capable of 1024x768 + cables or adapters to connect to DVI ouput <-- Check!
-USB keyboard + mouse (I have not tested PS/2 keyboard support) <-- Check!
- 3.5mm audio cable + speakers (sound will play thru onboard pc speaker, but volume is very low) <-- Check!
- It is highly suggested you have access to a wired lan connection, to use many of the features. <-- Check!
- The willingness to try a few dos based games, and report back to this thread with your experiences! <-- Oh, absolutely! Check!

And to think I've been thinking about picking up a thin client for retro gaming. I'm definitely interested in participating!

OOO yea! count me in!

Should be fun to do a little video on it too.

Will it properly support usb cd and floppy drives? I often will play cd based games or load things from floppy.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Excellent question, I’m guessing yes but I never tested that (just flash drives). So Linux will automatically mount the device, but then you will use mnthelp (custom batch file) to see ids of all mounted devices, then do a normal dosbox mount command to connect it.

I would be very interested. I plan to involve thin clients at a retro gaming convention I work with locally.

Saw your post on facebook and just wanted to say that this is really awesome of you.
I would love to try this out, but while I don't qualify I am glad to see the distro itself is available and plan to test it out
