There was a controversy some years ago over OpenBSD. Apparently the FBI was paying developers to put in backdoors. Whether this happened or not is still in dispute. Everybody involved denies it of course.

isn't openbsd an open source project and hence any backdoors would be spotted by someone outside reviewing the code?
having said that i can still imagine it, and escaping attention because everyone using it is assuming 'someone' reviews the code while no one actually did...
