X-COM MENZ:

The whole series is now live on Steam!

I posted this yesterday after a brief false alarm, but they're live now.

Some details on what versions we put up there:

1) UFO Defense: This is the DOS-based version of 1.4. We use DOSBox
2) Apocalypse: Retail version, also running DOSBox.
3) Interceptor: version 1.2 for Windows
4) Enforcer: 1.0 for Windows

All have been tested and run fine in Vista.

TFD is still the Windows version, but I do intend to update that to use DOSBox at some point so we get Vista compatibility.

$4.99 each, whole series for $15, 10% off for the first week.

I like this from the thread at ShackNews:

So do you guys license DOSBox? I hope the DOSBox guys are getting a nice donation from Valve.

It's shameful how Sierra and other companies have dealt with them in the past. Sierra never even contacted them when making those adventure game compilations.

Well I bet we'll see a ton more downloads of DOSBox from sourceforge now. I see alot of people on various forums asking if DOSBox can work with other games. heh. You'd think everyone would know about DOSBox by now. Guess not.

From the above link.

Who has the source code? Is it just lost? that would be sad.

jason bergman
Long lost, I'm afraid. When we acquired the franchise it had already changed hands many, many, many times.

Similarly, we don't have the source code to any Sid Meier title prior to Civilization 3. Sid had them all on a laptop that he lost years ago.

Nice.

Qbix, you'd better be checking in your code nightly!

and unless you happen to be reading this on a 286 with less than four megabytes of RAM, you have zero worries about system requirements.

Great. Just great.

A recent issue of PC Gamer had your "dosboxed" version of Colonization on it's demo disc.

Yep, but 2K is going to release it on the net sometime between now and the heat death of the universe.

Heh. Yeah you probably need a 900 MHz P3 or better to run it well. I ran XCom in DOSBOX on a 1GHz P3 and it did ok.

What do you guys to do test the game for them? I remember X-Com running too fast in some spots but slower in others, such as the Geoscape vs. the tactical combat. It seemed stable enough though. That was about 2 years ago now so it was an older version of DOSBOX.

Anyone know what the "output=" line is set in dosbox.conf for the Steam X-COM games? I'm seeing a couple of people in different forums having issues with "corrupted graphics". Almost all of the posts don't have system specs or dosbox configs so it's hard to tell what's going on. They are probably all using Vista with crappy intel video cards and drivers.....

I saw the config posted somewhere....

Edit: But my google-foo is weak today so I can't seem to find it.

Hello, I recently bought the x-com pack from steam and using vista. Tried running apocalypse I set it up to run in window mode and it runs fine but in fullscreen I get flicker and corrupted graphics an choppy sound.

Running Vista 64 Ultimate
Geforce 9600gt
latest drivers
Xfi soundblaster card

Settings for dosbox.conf are

[sdl]
# fullscreen -- Start dosbox directly in fullscreen.
# fulldouble -- Use double buffering in fullscreen.
# fullresolution -- What resolution to use for fullscreen: original or fixed size (e.g. 1024x768).
# windowresolution -- Scale the window to this size IF the output device supports hardware scaling.
# output -- What to use for output: surface,overlay,opengl,openglnb,ddraw.
# autolock -- Mouse will automatically lock, if you click on the screen.
# sensitiviy -- Mouse sensitivity.
# waitonerror -- Wait before closing the console if dosbox has an error.
# priority -- Priority levels for dosbox: lowest,lower,normal,higher,highest,pause (when not focussed).
# Second entry behind the comma is for when dosbox is not focused/minimized.
# mapperfile -- File used to load/save the key/event mappings from.
# usescancodes -- Avoid usage of symkeys, might not work on all operating systems.

fullscreen=true
fulldouble=false
fullresolution=original
windowresolution=original
output=surface
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal
mapperfile=mapper.txt
usescancodes=true

[dosbox]
# language -- Select another language file.
# memsize -- Amount of memory dosbox has in megabytes.
# machine -- The type of machine tries to emulate:hercules,cga,tandy,pcjr,vga.
# captures -- Directory where things like wave,midi,screenshot get captured.

language=
machine=vga
captures=capture
memsize=32

[render]
# frameskip -- How many frames dosbox skips before drawing one.
# aspect -- Do aspect correction, if your output method doesn't support scaling this can slow things down!.
# scaler -- Scaler used to enlarge/enhance low resolution modes.
# Supported are none,normal2x,normal3x,advmame2x,advmame3x,hq2x,hq3x,
# 2xsai,super2xsai,supereagle,advinterp2x,advinterp3x,

frameskip=0
aspect=false
scaler=normal2x

[cpu]
# core -- CPU Core used in emulation: normal,simple,dynamic,auto.
# auto switches from normal to dynamic if appropriate.
# cycles -- Amount of instructions dosbox tries to emulate each millisecond.
# Setting this value too high results in sound dropouts and lags.
# You can also let DOSBox guess the correct value by setting it to max.
# The default setting (auto) switches to max if appropriate.
# cycleup -- Amount of cycles to increase/decrease with keycombo.
# cycledown Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage.

core=auto
cycles=auto limit 100000
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

[mixer]
# nosound -- Enable silent mode, sound is still emulated though.
# rate -- Mixer sample rate, setting any devices higher than this will
# probably lower their sound quality.
# blocksize -- Mixer block size, larger blocks might help sound stuttering
# but sound will also be more lagged.
# prebuffer -- How many milliseconds of data to keep on top of the blocksize.

nosound=false

[midi]
# mpu401 -- Type of MPU-401 to emulate: none, uart or intelligent.

# config -- Special configuration options for the device. In Windows put
# the id of the device you want to use. See README for details.
