What is it with all the crazy prices on ebay lately for old 486 systems? I find it difficult to find a "decent" 486 anywhere and when they do pop up they demand high prices! Most of the ridiculous prices i see are from American ebayers... is there a huge demand for 486 PC's in the states??

6 of these systems have actaully been sold 😳 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NCR-3230-486DX-33-Deskt … =item2ea03178d5

How does this seller sleep at night with that price? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Zenith-UIC-3032-00-486D … =item2ea0314f2c

Another from the same seller: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Toshiba-PA1181U-T6A-Sat … =item2ea02dd1a0

These are the only 486 PC's i can find on ebay with the exception of this "bare" and probably untested system: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/486-DX4-100-mini-tower- … =item19bb6f98c3

Anyway, i'm thinking about selling a nice 486 PC but need a rough idea on the price i should be selling it at. I could start an auction at 99p or i could list a "buy it now price" but have no idea what kind of price to aim for?

Anyway here are the specs of the system i want to sell:

CPU: AMD 486DX4 - 100mhz (with heatsink + fan).
Cache: 256kb
RAM: 32mb (2 x 16mb FPM 72-pin SIMM's).
Motherboard: Brand is unknown (model number is JK-042A). It's a socket 3 board with UMC chips and has 3 x ISA, 3 x VLB and 4 x 72-pin SIMM slots.
Graphics Card: 1mb Cirrus Logic SVGA (VLB).
Sound Card: Genuine Sound Blaster Pro 2 ISA (CT1600)
I/O card: I believe it's a Winbond model (VLB) and has the usual IDE, floppy and Serial ports etc...
Hard Drive: 3.2gb Fujitsu IDE drive formatted into 2 partitions.
CD-ROM Drive: Sony 8x speed IDE drive.
Floppy Drive: Standard 1.44mb type.
Speakers: Front panel type with stereo speakers and a built-in mini sub woofer (great sound for a small unit!).
OS: Windows 95 installed with all correct drivers etc... (no disc).

All housed in a standard desktop style AT case with a 200W AT PSU. This PC does not have any of the usual "yellowing" to the case and is in great condition!

Does anyone have an idea what this could fetch on ebay? Cheers 😎

I've had okay luck selling 386 PCs, but I haven't been able to sell any 486 PCs yet. If you do a good job with the auction, you can probably get $200.

What surprises me more is not that people are asking $200 for a 486, but that theres actually a few people who are, in multiple occasions, paying that for a 486.
Lol, if this continues, in a couple years I'd better get my attic insured!

It's certainly possible to get about £75 in the UK:

but it's also possible it will take many attempts to find a buyer.

That auction where 6 were sold in the US - 5 were sold to one buyer in February, none since it seems and that buyer didn't leave feedback as far as I could see.

I had a Packard Bell PC (runs DOS/Win 3.11) and a CTX PC (runs win 95) that I got rid of in March 2009. My folks (as well as some of my fellow members on the PC Guide forum) told me that these very old PC's were so obsolute that no one would want them, that I wouldn't make very much money trying to sell them, so I gave them to my girlfriend's kids. Then as the kids never used them, my girlfriend told me that she gave them to someone else.

My old Packard Bell (now gone - I don't miss it); and

my old CTX (also gone - don't miss this either)

And I believe that if I tried to sell them on ebay it would (for Mom and I at least) be too much of a hassle to pack them in boxes, weigh them and carry them to the car and from car into post office. So the best action in my case was to let my girlfriend take them off my hands.

As for you PowerPie, I hope you make a nice sell with your old 486's.

I wish you good luck on selling them!
