Just curious, for the people familiar with setting up Windows ME, in the beginning you get to choose if you want a normal setup, minimal setup etc.
Of course I always pick the custom setup 😁

But frankly, I don't exactly know what many of these exactly do, let alone considering ME is over a decade old there might be far better substitutes available. But otoh some might be absolutely necessary for some of the other options.

Anyway, I installed ME yesterday on VPC and these are the thingies I could select or unselect.
Here is a (almost) clean list, I'll post the same list again, but with what I choose to install and what to omit:

Accessibility

  • Accessibility Options
    Accessibility Tools

Accessories

  • Briefcase
    Calculator
    Desktop Wallpaper
    Document Templates
    Imaging
    Mouse Pointers
    Paint
    Screen Savers

Address Book
Communications

  • Dial-Up Networking
    Dial-Up Server
    Direct Cable Connection
    HyperTerminal
    Internet Connection Sharing
    MSN Messenger Service
    NetMeeting
    Phone Dialer
    Universal Plug and Play
    Virtual Private Networking

Desktop Themes

  • <Lots of all kinds of themes>
    Desktop Themes Support
    Windows Millennium

Games

  • Classic Games
    Internet Games
    Plus! Games

Multilanguage Support

  • <some languages to select>

Multimedia

  • Audio Compression
    Macromedia Shockwave
    Macromedia Shockwave Flash
    Media Player
    Multimedia Sound Schemes
    Sample Sounds
    Sound Recorder
    Video Compression
    Volume Control

Online Services

  • <4 options of which I picked none>

Outlook Express
System Tools

  • Character Map
    Clipboard Viewer
    Compressed Folders
    Disk Compression Tools
    Net Watcher
    System Monitor
    System Resource Meter

Which options do you pick and which one do you omit altogether?
Have any preferences? And what's completely useless?
And are there any options that are in itself quite good, but you have a superior replacement for?

I hope the formatting isn't all too confusing.

If someone pops up with a post with proper formatting, I'll sneakily
copy his techniques 😜

Accessibility - I just enable this, as it well...why disable it? 😁

  • Accessibility Options
    Accessibility Tools

Accessories

  • Briefcase - I enable this, it has something to do with sharing files in a network?
    Calculator - I install this, it's a must, 🤣!
Desktop Wallpaper - Enabled, these belong in a ME retro rig 😜
Document Templates - Installed! It provides extra templates for when you create a new file (Thanks for pointing this out Davros 😉 )
Imaging - I install this as it has a use
Mouse Pointers - I just install these
    Paint - Installed!
Screen Savers - Just pick what you want, I typically install at least some of them

Address Book - Not sure what this is used for
Communications

  • Dial-Up Networking - Installed, but is it useful?
Dial-Up Server - Is this useful?
Direct Cable Connection - This seems rather handy to have
HyperTerminal - Really no idea, but I installed it anyway
Internet Connection Sharing - Dunno about this one
MSN Messenger Service - I uh...well, lets just install it anyway?
NetMeeting - Can you use this to chat with other people on your LAN???
    Phone Dialer - Eh...why not
Universal Plug and Play - To me, a must have!!!
    Virtual Private Networking - Purpose?

Desktop Themes

  • <Lots of all kinds of themes> - These I don't install
Desktop Themes Support - Installed, because it's needed for the WinME theme
Windows Millennium - Installed, I like the WinME theme 😀

Games - All installed 😀

  • Classic Games
    Internet Games
    Plus! Games

Multilanguage Support - I eh, just leave it installed, perhaps theres some documents that need these to be readable?

  • <some languages to select>

Multimedia

  • Audio Compression - Any use? I installed it anyway
    Macromedia Shockwave - Installed
    Macromedia Shockwave Flash - Installed
Media Player - Installed, though I know theres a newer version available and it can be updated anyway
Multimedia Sound Schemes - These are the pretty moving shapes in MP? I install these as I like them 😀
    Sample Sounds - Not installed
Sound Recorder - Installed, but I'll bet theres much better stuff out there!
Video Compression - I just installed this, seems not totally useless
Volume Control - Installed, I find it handy

Online Services - For the love of god, lmao!

  • <4 options of which I picked none>

Outlook Express - Not installed, I think it's useless...riight?
System Tools

  • Character Map - Installed
    Clipboard Viewer - Installed
    Compressed Folders - Installed
Disk Compression Tools - Not Installed!!
    Net Watcher - Installed
System Monitor - Installed, this is fun though disabling that ME backup thingy disables it again I think
System Resource Meter - Installed, this is fun though disabling that ME backup thingy disables it again I think

Looks a lot like 98, here's what I understand and/or do regarding some of the less clearcut ones:

Accessibility - I understood this was for people with vision impairment so I never install these

Briefcase - I understood this was for synchronising with something or other, more for mobile users [ie. laptops reconnecting to a network] so I never use

Address Book - just a database of contacts used for eg outlook or phone dialing

Dial-Up Networking - iirc one of these is needed for normal internet access, even on broadband, or maybe even tcp/ip - try unintalling and see what happens 😜

Direct Cable Connection / HyperTerminal - I used these for serial access to a linux box. At least hyperterminal.

Internet Connection Sharing - only need if your pc has the modem and you want another pc to be able to access web via network connection to your pc. Not necessary if you have a network router

Phone Dialer - will need this for dial-up and faxing

Virtual Private Networking - understood this was ip tunnelling type of stuff, like where you use internet to connect to secure work network. No use to most home users.

Multilanguage Support - Would like to understand this better myself. Does it mean you can see other language docs properly? has it anything to do with different kb layouts or getting other characterswhen typing? etc

My guess is this is about being able to display other characters properly (instead of heaps of those blocky things), but I'm not sure about this either

I've recently found an interesting page, it's supposed to make tweaking WinME easier:
http://classic-web.archive.org/web/2006082907 … om/oppcomme.htm

Anyone ever tried it?

Anyway, I'll download it and try it out in VPC later

I leave out Accessability, Address Book and Communications, and Online Services (shudder) completely.

In Games, I leave out Internet Games.

Accessories, System Tools and Desktop Themes - I click the full complete single check box, with both eyes closed. They're a must for me, though I hardly use many of them. 😁
