I know this forum isn't dedicated to such things, but I've noticed that we have quite a few sound hardware buffs on VOGONS and even some musicians... and it can't hurt to ask.
I'm looking for a good modern sound device, suitable for use in a DAW. As for now I use a USB-based E-MU 0202, but I have a bunch of issues with it.
This is the most annoying one: if one app is using the E-MU in ASIO mode, no other app can access the device. At all.
The crappy onboard sound device built-in with my PC never had such a limitation.... I could set my recording software to use ASIO4ALL, and still play a track in Winamp (for comparison, etc) while it was running. I could even fire up SchismTracker, load a module, and play along with my guitar or bass plugged in and routed to a VST plugin in SONAR. With the E-MU this is all no-go. As far as I could find out, that's the way the drivers work, and there's no current or planned fix.
So here's what I'm after:
- 96KHz / 24-bit recording and playback
- GOOD drivers for Windows (XP and up), that don't exhibit the above problem, and let apps use the device simultaneously in ASIO and WDM
- Either PCI or USB (actually prefer PCI if the drivers are better... portability is not a concern)
- High quality audio inputs, preferrably with flexible levels / resistance ranges, and "ground lift"
if you've got recommendations, fire at will.
