If you're looking for something all-encompassing, you might check out the Logitech F310. It has a toggle switch on the back that switches it from DirectInput mode to Xinput mode, which makes it great for older games, and also compatible with newer games that can make use of Xbox controllers.

I have one of the earlier models of this gamepad before the 360-controller support was added. Both have a special mode button, as you can see in the picture, that lets you swap the functionality of the d-pad and left analog stick on the fly. VERY handy! :3
