I'm trying to find a way of getting these extracted from the .exe files if that's possible.
Or maybe it isn't?
Are they gifs?
This is curiosity really for something I'm writing about.

Do you want the animation or the image files?

For the animation, the only way is to capture it. The image files are available on the internet.
Here is a video I uploaded a while ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8UvDRc_rdo
I could send you the original lossless file if needed/wanted.

I understood they were stored in the video card BIOS – meaning you'd somehow have to dump the BIOS and figure out the method used to store the animation.

Splash screens are stored in 3dfxspl2.dll and 3dfxspl3.dll.
And yes, the correct way is video capturing. But there is an alternative. You may use nGlide (or other glide wrapper) and Fraps, nGlide will renders a logo in D3D so Fraps can capture it.
P.S. There is 3rd logo from Quantum.

Many thanks for your kind replies.
That gif is really cool and takes me back a bit...sheds tear.
I often wondered if they were stored in the card bios too, but then I found that the splash would change from either image 1 or 2 depending on the 3dfx patch used (in emulation)....
Cheers and thanks!

3dfx splashes are actually 3d scenes complete with textures. They make up the bulk of the driver size 😀

I recall seeing this splash in a late 98 3dfx driver, non-Quantum...
