Hello all,
I have been trying to set up a LAN party with my friends, however there has not been a lot of interest for it. Thats why I was wondering, maybe some people here at vogons could set up some multiplayer servers? I have been trying to play over dial up on my Packard Bell and there are not a lot of servers online these days. Now, heres a question, how would these servers work? Do you have to have a dedicated PC online 24/7 that hosts the servers? I'm not really familiar with all this networking. Also, are the dos games maybe not a possibility since they use IPX? I know some dos games are playable over the internet, just don't remember which ones. I have played Quake 1 online, most of the servers are empty though. I was just thinking it would be a good idea if some guys here at vogons could get together and setup servers. Maybe even me, but it would have to be at 9:30 PM-? because my 3g hotspot is my dads work internet, but I could use the dial up, but only at night like I said. Let me know your thoughts guys! Thanks, -A

There are a variety of systems to accommodate multiplayer games, and some have been around for many years. Some are peer-to-peer, some are client-server oriented and some are VPN systems. Here are a few:

If you look hard enough, you can probably find public servers devoted to specific games, but the communities may be microscopic in size, and many struggle to find the funds to keep public servers available.

The No One Lives Forever community is still served by UnityHQ servers for example:

Myth 2 users still have Gate of Storms:

And if you can figure out where the communities are, there are public/private servers for leagues/clans/ladders/etc. devoted to specific games. Descent Rangers play Descent II for example:
