If the ftp no longer exists. No way.
If it needs username and password and you don't know them, there is this widely known security bug in ALL ftp servers that let you login with admin@password.
Seriously, no way...

You mean

Username: anonymous
Password: [a valid email address]

doesn't work?

501 can mean a variety of things. Do you have a full log for the connection attempt? did you try to get in with a web browser or a full FTP client? Also, are you sure that's the link you intended to share? I just didn't see the FTP stuff, but that web site sure does look pretty!

Granted if it dates back to 1998 and wasn't popular enough that it ended up being mirrored somewhere (and even many popular ones are dead now), count it gone for good. The address may still respond, but that doesn't mean the original content is still available, let alone that anonymous login (or any other type) should work at all.

Not sure how Robin doesn't know this... but hey, we all can't be experts. 😀
