Be prepared for the power draw increase.. wasn't expecting that with my dual-1366 server. I upgraded it from 12GB ram (12x1GB) to 12x4GB and it increased @wall power draw by as much as about +175 watts. Using a modern platinum power supply too.

I'm aware. but anything ddr3 will draw less power then the FB ddr2 I'm using in my cerent system. The ram id for a system upgrade. FBddr2 can pull upwards of 20w a stick. more typically 10-15w

Just got a PCI-e ASUS XONAR DX like new with box for 35$ 😀
My new dual 1366 system sold be cool, add that sound card and 48bg of ram, a 2gb 285 and 6 120gb ssd's in raid 😈

I redid the thermal paste and cleaned the fan and heatsink. Was surprised how dust-free the inside was. Pretty sweet machine for its time.

Nice laptop for mid to late 2000s gaming and much better built than the cancer that passes for modern laptops, I really do miss how easy laptops were to work on back then.

Recently bought barebones HP z220 workstation, not too much actually, to replace the optiplex 780. Later on collected parts for it: i5-3570 (seller listed as 3470 for 65+15 cdn shipped, nice), 16GB (two sticks DDR3 1600), Sapphire HD 6850 1GB for a song, Only new part is Toshiba 2TB 7200 64MB. Was 3TB hgst that I could not get win10 to work with full 3TB on early UEFI design (?). Gave it a Intel Pro/1000 PT NIC. Running W10 Pro.

Optiplex 780 kept intact for now. I run two hard drives policy so I have safety in backups keeping one data I keep on one HD, When I'm ready to game, I'll add 3rd. z220 and z420 HD bays can hold 3 HDs which Dell cannot for years even their workstation T3610 is even worse.

Future purchases: E3-1290V2, 16GB ECC. ECC is more important than anyone thinks larger than 16GB, excuse me intel are you listening? Ryzen does support ECC (confirmed by Aanadtech). Far in future, Z420 or Ryzen socket 4094 threadripper.

I actually assembled it week ago and enjoying same time,but was soooo lazy to take pics,anyway here is my almost complete Ryzen build,spex:

Ryzen 7 1700 box
Msi B350M Mortar Arctic (picked it because they dont have usual one)
Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB Kit DDR4-3000,so far its on 2667 and waiting for bios patch

only thing is left is Vega gpu...

if anyone care other misc is:
old trusty hd 7850 2gb
adata sp600 256gb ssd and 500gb wd black hdd(temporary hdd)
nzxt source 210 elite case
Corsair CMPSU-650TXEU psu also old and dusty

While that may be true right now today, there's no way to know how that will hold up with future systems later this year.
I may be wrong in predicting this today, but.. I couldn't imagine a 7-year old platform with 12 cores would be very competitive vs modern-day 2017 platforms with 16 cores in any possible way, in any test.
If anything else, just the sheer number of physical cores alone should be the biggest difference.

There's also the current-generation Broadwell-Xeon systems that go dual-socket with 22 cores per CPU that we can buy right now. Expensive, but they do exist.

True the sr-2 days are numbered and it will not be long that the average desktop is faster.
But the system is still very relevant for some things. It's a solid overclocker too. Pretty much anything that doesn't need a lot of cores the sr-2 is a good system for.
Not to mention it can use regular desktop ram unlike most dual CPU systems.

Also core count doesn't=preformas.

Depends on what you're doing depends on core count. For gaming and most every day stuff, more cores better? no. Video editing? Yes! Transcoding video from one format to the other? YES! (Transcoding programs still use CPU even with gpu assistance).

Completely wrong.
Compare a core2 quad with a modern dual core like the 7350K. Complete night and day even with the tasks you state.

We were discussing Ryzen, and SR-2 and various multi-cpu multi-core platforms... nothing at all to do with dual cores.. okay.. whatever then.

We were discussing that until the discussing took a turn into core count vs performance were just about anything CPU is relevant.

At the end of the day there is a lot more to it then just core count.

I would like to add that in a modern day sense dual cores only make sense for light duty productivity office machines/web browsers. And in that case I wouldnt even bother with a modern dual core vs a new one, unless warranties and reliability are a concern.

Finished my Lenovo ThinkPad T420 project, scooped it up on eBay and added a few nice upgrades like mSATA SSD + SATA SSD + 2nd bay SATA caddy w/ 320GB data HD, USB 3.0 expresscard. It just needs a new battery.
