This has been bugging me for years and i cant figure it out windows 98 will not connect to anything on my workgroup, it see's my nas and I can open it, but it doesn't show any files or folders.

My windows 95 machine connects to it after i install ftp/ip client with nothing else added and that's even older so whats with 98?

I was able to get my windows 8.1 machine to connect to the 98 machine tho (not possible in vise versa)

I don't know, but I had a similar issue on my Win 98 rebuild. I can share out a folder on my D: drive on Win 98 and see it from my Windows 10 PC. I can also drop files onto that drive from my Win10 PC since the internet is stable and works lightning fast over there compared to using Firefox 2.0 on Windows 98 with a 10/100 PCI ethernet connection. But I can't do the reverse. I could see the PC, but can't really open anything without locking up Explorer.exe and having to restart it. I'll tinker around with it over time, but it's not high on my to-do list, if you know what I mean. Hell, it was almost an adventure just to get it on the network via TCP/IP after I reinstalled Win98. I had to reread all the stuff I had forgotten over the last 17 years since I first bought that PC.

Maybe this could help?

EDIT: This article mentions about lanman support --which is needed by Windows 98.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Your NAS should have a smb.conf file, you need to access it via telnet or other means. How this is done on your NAS, I don't know.

Synology also dropped Lanman support a few months ago, I had the same issue.

But why does my windows 95 machine work with it, i don't get that at all

****Edit*****
would these keys have anything to do with it, I know that when windows 98 was release Microsoft had the bright idea to change the certificates and in windows ME i can connect with out problems either.

Heres a screen shot of the certificates on my NAS settings.

What does your NAS look like?

On my home network it's a mirrored RAID that is shared and Windows 98 SE can connect to it without issues. I did have to set the access permissions if I recall, basically lowering the security of some sorts, but that didn't worry me.

I could however never connect to the USB sharing feature of the modem / router. FTP would work, but I find it way too clunky.

Sorry, didn't word that properly.

Is it a computer, or a ready-to-go NAS?
