I love RPGs, especially native DOS ones with good music (either General MIDI or OPL). Right now I'm stepping outside the box by playing a modern RPG (Legend of Grimrock I), but I will be finishing it soon and looking forward to picking the next RPG. Here's some of my favorites that I've already completed:
Ultima Underworld I and II
Ultima VII Part 1 and 2
Lands of Lore 1
Menzoberranzan
System Shock 1 and 2

I prefer shorter games, otherwise they take too long to finish. For example, it took me 2.5 months to finish Ultima VII Part 2. The game was so good though, it was worth it. 😀

I might average 1 hr/day of gameplay, so a 60 hr game would take me about 2 months.

Here's some games I'm considering. Yes, I know some of these are very long, and some are not native DOS, but I'll still consider them if they're very good:
-Ultima VI (the graphics are borderline too rough for me, but I might get past it)
-Worlds of Ultima: Martian Dreams (same engine as above, but a shorter game)
-Planescape: Torment
-Fallout (I have the GOG version but I'd probably buy the original CD so I could play it in real DOS)
-Might and Magic: World of Xeen (apparently a very long game)
-Betrayal at Krondor
-Dark Sun: Shattered Lands
-Albion
-Anvil of Dawn
-Ravenloft 1 and 2
-Ultima VIII

I intentionally left out some highly-rated Gold Box games because they do not have in-game music, which I consider a requirement.

So again, my only requirement is good in-game music.
My preferences are:
-real DOS
-not too long (something I can finish in less than 2 months)
-turn-based, or if real-time then something that doesn't require fast reflexes (Lands of Lore was good, but Legend of Grimrock puts too much emphasis on fast reflexes, which makes the game more stressful than relaxing).
-catchy plot, but not so deep that I have to keep notes, or forget the story if I don't play for a few days in a row.
-relaxing, slow-paced gameplay (eg. Ultima VII).

Also, if you know of a game I didn't list, please share. All opinions are welcome. 😀

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Maybe Darklands or Eye of the Beholder?

Thanks. I actually own both of those (GOG) but haven't played them. Checked out some Let's Plays of them, doesn't sound like either of them have in-game music?

I would suggest Eye Of the Beholder 2. It is the best of the series. One of my favorite games of all times. Solid gameplay, decent graphics. The original is a subset of 2 and looks worse while 3 is a bit all over the place (but looks slightly better).

They both do. Darklands has GM music and EotB has an FM soundtrack.

It's subtle background music when dungeon crawling, but it's there. The menu music would be good enough by itself, I think.

Not really short, and not for DOS, but Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura is great. It has some of the weirdest and best humor I have seen in a computer game, and the story is not bad either.

What about Knights of Xentar? A casual JRPG (or is it an ARPG?) to change the chip from so many traditional RPGs (unless you're addicted to pen and paper).

Superhero League of Hoboken is not exactly the pinnacle of RPG gameplay, but it's worth a spin, I think.

Some people are fond of the Magic Candle trilogy, apparently.

Maybe Auto Duel? That's sort of an RPG, isn't it?

And there's the old Neophyte trilogy.

Since you're considering World of Xeen, How about Might & Magic III - Isles of Terra? I think the music (composed by "The Fat Man") is fantastic and overall it's one of my favorite games of all-time. It makes full use of the CM-32L with the extra sound effects.

I also love World of Xeen - they built up on MM3 but I think the music (General Midi) isn't as good.

@gdjacobs: Impressed that Darklands has GM music for a 1991 game. One of the first games with GM?

@gdjacobs, vladstamate, appiah4: I'm going to have to fire up EOB 1/2 for testing because every Let's Play I've watched, I don't hear any in-game music. Maybe the Let's Players are muting it.

@MMaximus: I think I picked World because it was the latest M&M for DOS, but I don't have an MT-32, so if I played III, it would be with FM music. I'd be using my DreamBlaster S1 or X2 for World of Xeen.

Appreciate the ideas and recommendations guys.

Looking a little deeper, I might have been misinterpreting some of the background sound effects in dungeon crawling as composed music. That makes me a little bit sad.

Legend of Darkmoon does have event music in game.

@Dagar: Hexx looks intriguing (coming from an Underworld/LOL point of view). I'd never heard of it back in the day. Thank you.

@gdjacobs: that link makes everything all better. 😀 Darklands is also very intriguing, but having never played it, there's something off-putting about it that I can't quite put my finger on. It seems...too tactical? Too stuffy? Not quite sure. Have you played much of it? It might be one of those games that once you get into the story, all that negative surface stuff disappears.

It's been forever since I played it at release, but Betrayal at Krondor was engrossing. Not sure how well it has aged. I'll need to fire it up myself!
