That'll be a fun mission to follow. I'm a huge rocket/space nerd. The Ingenuity helicopter is very exciting right now as well. I'm super excited that they extended its mission and to use it as a science and hazard scout for Perseverance.
Hi there! Thanks for your reply - I think I feel the same.
Still remember the Pathfinder days, when it was still in the news! ^^
As for the new Interstellar Probe, I just hope they decide wisely.
The Mariners, Pioneers and Voyagers proved to be longelived and venerable.
It would be a shame if they overdo and cramp to much modern technology into the new one.
There's some simple, yet elegant among the 1970s technology.
Let's just look at the design of the Voyagers and, say, New Horizons.
The later is true high tech, while the older siblings are well thought through.
The Voyagers have redundant systems, a purpose-serving design and durable computers.
Some components still function, despite working way out of spec due to the heaters being shut down because of power levels becoming critical.
Modern technology, like flash media, would surely fail under similar conditions.
Last, but not least, all predecessors of New Horizons have a timeless mechanical design.
Like the creations of DaVinci. 😉
