Windows is nagging me to use the ad-supported New Outlook. I'm going to try whatever Linux distro is on one of the flash drives on my desk (probably Lubuntu 22.04 since that's the last one I installed on physical hardware). I'll have to check what's on that Sandisk Ultra Flair that gets too hot to touch. I need to clean the USB ports on my computer first because only a few ports work at USB 3.x speed instead of USB 2.0 (and one port on the USB hub in my monitor doesn't work at all).

Also, my oven door broke off again. I replaced it one year ago (I found the order confirmation email - genuine replacement parts, not Amazon "upgrades"), but it's made out of plastic that's more brittle than a '90s laptop. I'm going to treat it the same way I treat those old laptops - ABS pipe cement. I guess appliance repair is a retro activity, though. Today, even people who aren't affiliated with the manufacturers will tell you to just buy a new one without considering where the money needs to come from. When you mention the cost, reduced quality, and the occasional forced arbitration agreement that you're forced to accept before you can even open the box (see LG refrigerators with their extremely unreliable compressors and the fact that the person who delivered the appliance is the one opening the box, not you), you're told to just get over it and keep buying. Modern life sucks.

Built my new family "server" and installed Ubuntu 22.04. Worked on getting it configured.

Ryzen 2600. 16GB RAM. 512GB NVMe. Had most of the hardware on-hand already, not being used. Just needed a motherboard and that arrived Sunday.

Once it's all done, it will be somewhat "headless", controlled by remote desktop. Used for running small family game servers (5-10 players). Heavily modded Minecraft most of the time, and Ark Survival Evolved every so often.

This setup may be overkill for those uses, but better to have extra, and room to expand, than not enough. 😀

Old servers were an FX-8350 x 8GB and an old Phenom II x 8GB. This one replaces both, is more powerful, and more efficient. Win win in my book.

Steam had a bargain on entire Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy so I went for it...

Updated 3 machines: (all SSDs)

1) my main rig, Linux went well; 2ndary Linux was 3 months old and updated under 10 minutes;
Win10 took 2 hours and I got an error on 2024-01 update for lack of space on recovery partition (if that is the error) and then I left it for another day

2) Linux on a laptop; under 10 minutes for an 8 month period update.

3) laptop; Linux, 1.5 year updates: cool, 15 minutes; Win10 took forever, more than 4 hours, for a 1.5 year update; got same error as above

Why Win10 takes forever even on NVMEs?

I see I'm not the only one that can't stand the fact Windows is so insanely slow when updating. In all reality, if it wasn't for my software and DirectX needs, I would run Ubuntu on everything. As it is now, I only run Windows on my primary system, everything else is Linux.

As far as my modern activities...more printing. 😀

Have decided to invest in a 2nd printer, an Ender 3 V3 SE my wife can use to print and sell all the designs she's making for her Etsy page. It's faster than my "upgraded" original Ender 3 (Glass bed, dual-z axis drives, direct drive extruder, CR Touch, etc.). It can do about 80mms now, but the V3 SE can do closer to 250mms and only runs a little over $200. Seems like a good deal to me.

I'm thinking of doing something similar, but just for "retro PC" related things, and only as time permits since I work full time.

Messing with an old Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB hard drive with bad sectors... out of boredom. This WAS my original FTP Archives drive but I long moved the data off to a Hitachi 500GB hard drive, and that is now the FTP Archives drive. This data is also on my main NAS.

Speaking of the NAS, another 4TB hard drive will be added to the setup (ordered the drive and should arrive soon), though I will need to change the motherboard in order to do so.

Site update: cwcyrix.duckdns.org -> cwcyrix.nsupdate.info due to the former no longer working.

With my Internet connection, downloading the updates is what takes the most time, and it still takes much more time than updating Linux. I noticed that the progress indicator on cumulative updates goes to 100% when it's really about 50% complete, and the download speed starts throttling after some time period.

So, the problem is on their end?
I have 2.5Gb fiber optics internet, and works @max speed most of the time (2.3 usually).

The hard drive has arrived! Initial stats are good; will have to run some tests on it sometime later.

Took a break from working on my new Ryzen 2600/Ubuntu powered "family game server" and enjoyed the effects from the 86% of the "Great North American Eclipse" I could see here in Wisconsin. 😜

The coolest part was seeing all the shadows turn into crescent shapes. Just wish I would have had the time to drive about 8 hours south to be in the path of totality, but, I've done that before, so missing this one wasn't so bad.

I was under path of totality, but just got to see a crescent for a couple of seconds 5 mins before and after and a half second glimpse of corona through the clouds.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Even with only 14% of the suns disk visible, it was still far too bright to see with anything other than proper solar viewing gear, that I don't have. So, I settled for the cool "dimming" effect, the wind picked up, and we seen those crescent shadows for several minutes up to and after max coverage. Was still an enjoyable experience.

Now, back to working on my server. 😀

I woke up to my desktop wallpaper being replaced with a badly-scaled (blurry) and badly-cropped (the bottom was cut off under the taskbar) message about Windows 10's end of support (in a year and a half). It really didn't look like anything Microsoft themselves would do, but it had functioning buttons and Malwarebytes found nothing.

Why does all software now use language like "not now" or "maybe later" for a button that would have been labeled "No" in the past?

Now I need to look for a Linux replacement for the video software I've been running. I still use VirtualDub in combination with AviSynth for some video editing tasks. I thought of building a dedicated Windows 7 system, but I would need a CPU with good single-thread performance to run QTGMC (or find a better deinterlacing algorithm that is multi-threaded).

No idea about the wallpaper change, that's not something I'm used to seeing on anything but managed machines, like those you use at work.

I also dislike the wording used on a lot of new software. It's all geared to persistently bug you, and I get some people need such reminders, but I for one don't. I often look for ways to disable any and all notifications from applications, and customize the ones I see in my OS. I've removed many apps that won't let me stop them from being intrusive. 😜

On a side note, I will likely still use Windows 10 after it's EOL. It's not like it stops working, it simply stops getting updates. I'm not worried much about security in the short-term because of how I have things setup. Still, I guess it will come down to how I feel when the time comes. I'm definitely not in any hurry to switch to 11. I didn't even move to 10 from 7 until it became necessary for software and games that I use.

As far as my modern activity for today. After years of lurking on Reddit, I finally created an account. 😀

Wow I can't believe that MS really changed your background to tell you, in a sloppy way, that win10 will be simply unsupported a year later. I really can't, I'd do some more checks and googling to verify that this is legit.

Had my HTPC/couch gaming PC on the bench today. The video was cutting out within seconds of booting up, and I was really hoping it wasn't my 2080 Super dying. Was hoping it was maybe a PSU issue. As it turned out, simply uninstalling the EVGA OC util I was using to manage the GPU fans seemed to fix it right up.

Here's hoping it'll be good to go. I have no desire to plunk down for a new GPU any time soon. 😬😬😬
