Same here, iPhone X. I try portrait mode, but it’s annoying so I end using landscape mode. A little better

That must be really painful.

Well, TBH, it's what happens when a website is not optimised to be mobile responsive...

I too end up using landscape mode. It's impossible to click on the last post link from the list unless it's landscape mode.

Just a few swipes? 2 seconds? My that must be frustrating in IOS. Maybe you need an Android device. After all they have 85% of the mobile market.

I can’t even open a website in an android device, terrible UI/IX, not intuitive, too many security vulnerabilities. Thanks God it “just works” in iOS... 😉

Back on topic, I am happy to see a trend to ditch jQuery in favor of vanilla Js. jQuery for me is the new “Flash”. It must die and has done its job to amend cross browser compatibility. Now that IE is dead, and Edge is going towards a chromium based solution, I see a more easier world for web developers. If only we could stop using more frameworks... I believe that when you use just what you needed, your site will work beautifully in any computer, device and/or even retro machines.

I talk about jQuery because many websites today need it and will not work without it. It’s quite difficult to use some portals with scripts disabled. Some forums too.

.

So vogons.org is not a web site? Try harder will you. I mean over 2.5 billion user seem to be managing ok.

As for epliots https://9to5mac.com/2019/09/03/ios-exploit-market-report/

"Meanwhile, on the Android side of things, Bekar says that “it’s very hard and time consuming to develop full Android exploit chains.” He added that until Apple “re-improves the security of iOS components such as Safari and iMessage,” Android exploits are more valuable."

And being in the IT industry you do know viewing web sites is the responsibility of the web browser not the underlying OS right? You know just click that big button on the home screen and a web browser launches? I mean it's been that way since Mosaic.

What, prey tell, particular Andriod browser do you have an issue with?

I never said that. I specifically said that the forum is designed for desktop/tablets, not for mobile devices.

I frankly do not believe in that. Most of the things floating around the web about iOS hacking is fake news. The truth is that android does have much more exploits developed and vulnerabilities found than iOS does.

iOS is, since a few years ago, the most secure mobile operating system of the world. I would never trust my data in an android device, period.

Again, I said the forum is not designed for mobile devices. It's the responsibility of the front-end programmer to provide a mobile responsive design for his website, not the web browser. At work it's what I do: I am specialised in designing web sites for mobile devices as well as finding creative UI/UX solutions for an easier user experience. I always design first for mobile devices before going to a full blown desktop experience.

It's just that the Vogon's designer chose not to offer a mobile friendly forum version. But since you asked: in iOS, all third party browsers are forced to use the iOS Safari rendering engine - Webkit. You know that, right?

Caluser2000 wrote:

ALL.

Now, I must underline that I never criticized the forum or its designers, never said its not a website. I just said the forum is not designed primarily for mobile devices. Actually, it's a pretty good design for desktop browsing and (to some extent) tablets. But it's just my opinion.

Of course. There are no exploits in the Apple ecosystem. And if there are, they only affect a small number of users - like the Uyghur Muslims for example.

On topic: I really hope a mobile design for this website gets finished soon.
It's a major pain to constantly zoom in and out - if at least the width of the post container would adjust to my phone, it'd be such a massive improvement. I get why it's not a priority, though - with Vogons being a site primarily for old desktop computers.

Are fun to play with though. Reminds me early '2000s when they frequented Windows and Linux forums. Quite refreshing. The other one has been a bit quiet lately. 😉

I'm pretty sure they get training classes to do this stuff.

Heh. Windows and Linux supply enough flamewars without ever involving Macs in the discussions. I recall when I actually held the "Windows Fanboy" and "Linux Fanboy" badges, that I earned in the same week (albeit on two different message boards). 🤣

This year will be the year of the desktop on Linux. I am sure of it! 🤣

People are simply too damn impatient and want everything instantly.

No that's not the reason. On a mobile device I cannot read the posts properly, because on every sentence I have to scroll left and right to be able to fully read it.

You don't have to scroll left and right to read a book. It's just horribly inconvenient that the text on this forum doesn't adjust to the physical edges of my screen. And the buttons are too small for fingers, so you have to tap 3 pixels with your finger that is 50 pixels wide.

It's horrible. We have different devices now than 10 years ago and people may argue that mobile designs dumb down things, but they are neccessary.

This. I get it too. But I think that a mobile option should be given - especially when now the WWW is too modern for the retro machines to handle. Most of them can handle mobile versions better than the desktop versions. For example, no browser in Windows 3.11 can handle CNNs full desktop, but since 2017, CNN does have a stripped down mobile version of their website, created for low bandwidth access in critical situations like a hurricane. It was a pretty good idea and since then there is a slow trend of a text based websites comeback. This can only help older retro machines. The key advantage in a mobile version is retro compatibility.

I didn’t start the war anyway - I just said specific things about the forum design without even blaming any particular device. The problems I mentioned are the same on my friends Galaxy S9, so that guy had no point in throwing that flame war here.

Agreed. I have nothing against linux in general - I even like some distros like elementaryOS and deepin.

My hate is all towards android and its terrible UI/UX experience.

Alright, just throw out the bait. If you do it often enough, somebody might take it. 🤣

He he. And it's repeated over and over and over again. Funny really. But there will be more diatribe on and on...... It's the nature of a troll.

Not on my Xperia. I simply double tap and the text zooms in wall to wall. I use Brave browser.
