It's exciting enough that Planet X3 actually is adding out-of-the-box support for these 16-color CGA+ cards that never saw any support back in the DOS gaming era. It's nice to finally seem them be utilized to their fullest potential in a game.

While I wouldn't say "to their fullest potential", because everything has to make do with the existing artwork via up- or down-conversion, it is certainly better than normal CGA or even no video whatsoever.
Also, the Plantronics programming experience, as you may have noticed, has already been reused in a driver for Sierra games that adds Plantronics support to some 20 titles.

Just in case anyone missed it:

The color translation LUT of the medium-resolution Tandy version has gotten some manual tweaks that make the conversion visually more appealing.

The result looks like this:

Planet X3 in med.-res. Tandy mode with improved LUT

Fair use/fair dealing exception

It can therefore now be viewed as a serious port rather than just a tech demo. Updated binaries are available.

Are all of the graphic adapters listed here? — Q(uick)Basic Screen Modes

No, I don't think so. 🙁

Also, I think there's one historic graphics system missing - the one of the X'press 16 (SVI-838).

Back in the 80s, this system's enhanced audio and graphics were supported by GW-BASIC.

.. and then there's the Leading Edge Model D, which has an 640x200 16c mode, making it a competitor to Tandy 1000 or PC1512.
Leading Edge Model D non-standard CGA mode

I dare to imagine there are still some more exotic systems out there.. Let's wait and see what the future may hold in store for us. 😉

Speaking of, didn't the Japanese TeraDrive PC (MegaPC rival) allow access to the Genesis hardware from the PC side?
I vaguely remember the dev kit had a sample program for that.

.. the Mindset PC had GW-BASIC support, too.

Edit: There's a whole set of MS DOS compatibles that are partially IBM compatible (BIOS simulator, basic CGA graphics emulation).

- Sanyo MBC 555
- BBC Master 512
- DEC Rainbow 100 (w/ NEC µPD7220 upgrade)?
- Texas Instruments Professional Computer ?
- Sirius 1/Victor 9000?
- ACT Apricot F1 (shim tool for MDA/CGA)
- Alphatronic PC 16 (w/ late, optional graphics module; CGA-ish, but on wrong address) ?
- Robotron PCs from East Germany (EC 1834, A 7150 etc)
- Poisk (USSR, near IBM compatible; CGA emulation with 32KB, 640x200 4c?)
- Elektronika MS-1502 (5,33 MHz; CGA 50 Hz in ASIC, but low on memory; 128KB total, 96KB PC/32KB video; has datasette ports)

Then there are non-PC/CGA systems, like Sharp MZ series (16-Bit), PC-9801 etc..

Edit: Some exotic, integrated systems (monitor)..
- HP-150 (8088/DOS, touchscreen, 512x390 mono)
- NCR PC4i (optional enhanced CGA card, ISA, "NGA"? )

Edit: This list isn't complete, of course. It's rather meant as some brainstorming thing.
In case there's an ongoing desire to support new graphics hardware.
I didn't mean to undermine the current efforts of writing drivers. It's an impressive list of supported hardware.

Since this thread has apparently been reactivated, let's use this opportunity to link to Planet X3's updated source code: https://github.com/planet-x3/px3_ose

Hi Benedikt,

where can i get the latest binaries with the newest features you implemented? New video modes and that CMS sound stuff you added?

There is no official release containing the latest binaries, but a minimal update package can be found here.
It contains the executable, a few support files and the engine manual explaining the command line options.
You can put them on an existing Planet X3 disk, but MIDI music will not work, nor will video output in modified CGA text mode, because the files are missing.
The build system of the Planet X3 Open Source Edition, as published on GitHub, would take the commercial digital download package, convert all the files and create complete disk images for you.
