I used to do a lot of doom map 'porting' to heretic hexen, the ability to have a 'hub' map made it possible to have a pwad with a bunch of deathmatch levels in it, which was really great for long DM sessions where you might want to replay a map a couple times or perhaps more importantly, not play a particular map.
I remember cris-crossing my 'hub' map with a bunch of linedefs that if hit would drop the ceiling on you instantly, to discourage attempted fighting inside the hub level.

Later I did some conversions of doom deathmatch levels to quake - I found an unfinished port of American McGee's "MAP01" to quake - and made a few Quake CTF levels intended for 2 players+bots.
I started work on porting one of my CTF maps to Unreal Tournament, and I think that pretty much was the end of it. I don't think I've done any map editing since about '04.

Wow, great times. I remember those magnicifent ports and the culture of the dreams 2000s blessed times. Its inspired me than but than in 04' its seems to me as huge & far & hard work.. but at 2008 I pickup my strentgh and started to do it. Today I bless on this gift. Its make me up in life and in a bad situations its helps me with hope. I love this hobby/work, I love to make my dreams. I love to escape back to the 2000s & 90s. I love to be creative and up people to succses.

Besides here a new video of my Padman spaceship. Enjoy all: https://youtu.be/IRNQ6yQAlLg?si=-NuCJme8VmELBwOq

I thought when reading about the subject of this topic, map making was about making maps as in SSI's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Gold Box games or creating rooms and directions for text adventures and even graphical adventures like the bamboo forest in Leisure Suit Larry 3 or the berry caves in Legend of Kyrandia, using actual paper with pencil and eraser.

Guess I'm getting too old.

OTOH, I did create maps for multiplayer game sessions with my best friend in Warcraft II.

Many ... many years ago. Yes. 😜

Primarily for Doom, Command & Conquer Red Alert 2, and Roller Coaster Tycoon, with a few for Duke 3D thrown in.

I wish I still had that data, but it was lost years ago. For Doom and RA2 I must have made a combined 20 or so maps, had some of them on my website at the time. I recently attempted to recover some of it using The Wayback Machine, but sadly, it no longer exists. Lost to the passing of time and my own forgetfulness in terms of storing my old data.

Still, they were good times, had a lot of fun. 😀

ah yes i think many of us did that type of map making too!

i do remember making RTS maps that totally favoured me occasionally! Sometimes just so i could enjoy the tech tree rather than being forced into an immediate rush-attrition

it would be good to find old data we've lost. I actually managed to create a fairly good subway track and train in duke3d once, it would be cool to go on that again. Of all the maps ever created i'd guess 99% are gone forever
