Hi all,

I have a fond memory of a 3D game construction engine that was given away with the UK magazine PC Review sometime in 1995. Looking at the pictures of the issues I can see at archive.org and other sites, I think it was either issue 44 or 45 as a kid hey are missing and I regonised the others out at about the same time.

Its cover feature was all about building your own VR headset and your own games and peripherals and it really captured my imagination as a 13yo. I remember I got a basic 3D model defined in, quite complicated engine and would love to try tinkering with it again now that I know what I do. My memory says that it was the same engine used by Digital Image Design to make Inferno, but I may be mis-remembering.

Does anyone have a copy of this issue? Do they know the name of the engine? Do they still have the cover CD with copies of the files? Long shot I know, but it would be a really cool retro 3D engine I think for folks to make new retro games with for 486 machines I think, in all its flat shaded poly goodness!

Cheers,
Chris!

Do you mean 'Simply 3D' perhaps ?
Made(?) by "Visual Software Ltd" in Liverpool ?
I do not have any cover disks, nor for this issue #44.

Or did you mean'Matisse Light' image processing programme in issue #45 ?

Either way, none say anything about any 'game construction' though, so unless you specify more WHAT the program actually does, those are probably not what you're looking for......

Now, there was 'something' in issue 49 though, from November 1995.
Called "3D-Ware".

...over £115 worth of games creation tools!

But you'll need a "386 based PC" for this one, heh....
If you want the Pro version, call '3D-Ware' on (0161) 237 9929 for upgrade details.

Otherwise you might be happy with the basic version:

Other than that, I don't think there were any such 'game construction' programmes in PC Review that year, but haven't looked too hard though, so who knows... 😅

I think you mightve nailed it, I think it was 3D-Ware, Iooking at the covers of the magazine's that I could find I didn't think it was that late in 95, but it fits the bill. I'm downloading the iso now to see.

It was more of an SDK than a point and click thing, I think that's why it eventually stumped me as a kid. I'm interested to find out again who made it and if any actual games were made using it.

Many thanks again for your help! Vogons rocks!

From this website it looks like it was also on PC Format CD 19: http://ronanphotog.dx.am/3d-Ware.htm

Right, now I just need to spend aaages figuring out how to make the '95 3D game of my 13 year old dreams !!

Thanks again!
