Scouring old PC / DOS games, I find that one of the oldest games is Chess written in 1980, released in 1981 on IBM PC by International PC Owners. Here's a YouTube video (not mine) for illustration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX9SxYhYgpc

I think my chess skills are around 900-1200 ELO. Played the computer on easiest difficulty setting, and was about to win, but then it pulled an extra special move, shown in the attached photo.

I am white, moved queen from E2 to capture on E7. Black's king was on E8. My queen is guarded by the bishop on the right, so I felt gleefully happy to best the 8088 CPU, until it outsmarted me with some creative out of the box thinking to escape mate - That really surprised me out of my seat!

I've already run the CPU through extensive test battery to verify it is not breaking down, so I conclude I must have caught it running something that was certainly not programmed into it..

If you have a 8088 rig, watch out for its surprising behavior in the coming 2022. 😉

Happy new year!

nice 😀

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

8088/2022 = 4
Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
Apocalypse Now, early major movie role for Laurence Fishburne who was co-star of
The Matrix, which was all about AI repressing humanity.
Coincidence? I think not.

😉

edit: BTW what I am gonna guess happened is that it started the move to castle THEN hit the condition about not being allowed to castle while in check so stopped halfway and didn't bring the rook over.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Haha, awesome replies 😀

Now I realize there are other castling bugs in that game as well. It is possible to king side castle as the first starting move as white, when none of your pieces have even cleared out of the way. :>

The IBM Chess88 from a few years later is actually an amazing implementation. Nice controls (arrows and INS and DEL) and well done visual presentation. Though after watching that video, I wish it came with that kind of audio voicing 😀

AFAIK some early computer chess programmes have this problem of the AI occasionally making illegal moves, this was something to be specifically watched out by programmers and prevented when possible.

It shouldn't have attempted castling in any form when in check anyway.
