Fellow VGM fans,

I like to share two collections I made of particularly fine FM tunes (MS-DOS, AdLib, Sound Blaster, PC-88/98 and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive)

My personal computer music history started with a Sound Blaster 1.5 (and yes, I paid to have the two Philips CMS "Stereo" chips installed) and I've loved AdLib music ever since. Mainly for nostalgia but also for the clever frequency modulation technology used to make sound.

During my research for these playlists, I found that FM's flexibility may have been a bit of a double edged sword. Because it was difficult to compose directly in FM, most games used generic soundbanks to translate existing MIDI music and the result was not always that remarkable.

Now, thanks to many links shared on this, and other forums around the web I have gathered my personal favourites and notable compositions and made sure to mention the composers so the rest of their work may be searched for if you are so inspired.

Enjoy!

Ysbrand

Awesome! I just started listening to the "Downbeat" collection. I already see so many songs I really like — and kudos for opening with Cannon Fodder!

Just my 2 cents:

Chinatown — The Revenge of Shinobi for Genesis, also composed by Yuzo Koshiro.
Encore — What Is Love for AT2

very nice!
if I can make a suggestion is this: maybe put an annotation or something with the track currently playing

Thank you. I only became aware of Cannon Fodder as an adult. The (sad) irony of this collection is that I've only played 5 of these games when I was a kid. (Don't know what that says about the quality of the music of the games that I did play 😉

But, I guess, it speaks to the quality of the tracks that are on the list. My selection criterion was that they can stand on their own as genuinely good electronica tracks.

Aaargh! More suggestions! 😉)
I will add them to my private playlist but I hope you'll forgive me for not adding them to the video just yet. It took me way too much time of fiddeling to make them and I really should get on with other things. 😉

Yeah, I'd love that and it should happen automagically when you put timestamps in your description. But for some reason Youtube only does this when you have > 1k subscribers.

(This is not a subtle request for subscribers, I don't think I'll be adding any videos any time soon. 😉

It's absolutely fine, I didn't expect you to add them or anything 😀
