This is a strange world... Hell is freezing... I wonder when we see boxed MacOS as alternative to Windows on normal PCs... The most difficult part was done.
I am not sure how succesfull new Intel based Macs will be. Macs will be far easier to compare with normal PCs (less stylish but usually less expensive).

If this is true and they do use x86 chips then this will probably be the OS to be *nix to the massess.

But, it might be possible to run Windows on a MAC:

After Jobs' presentation, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller addressed the issue of running Windows on Macs, saying there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac. "That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac. They probably will," he said. "We won't do anything to preclude that." However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac."

Well, it is one thing to say that they will not allow it - it is an entirely different thing to prevent it. A machocist with a copy of the Apple ROM should be able to do it.

I am interested in seeing how they prevent OSX for x86 being run on anything besides Apple hardware. When I first heard the news about the switch to Intel I thought they said Intel, not x86 specifically, so maybe they would use Itanium or another Intel chip. It turned out that wasn't what happened. I would suspect very limited driver availability for anything besides official Apple hardware will be one thing to keep OSX running on cheap PC clones. I think they could easily allow the opposite though, dual booting Windows on a x86 Apple.
