Is mercenaries an "add-on" or does it come bundled with the original?

The release you DON'T want is actually the newest one with MW2, MW2: Ghost bears legacy, and MW2: Mercenaries in one box set. It has enhanced effects that ruin game performance (even on new machines), bad looking enhanced textures, and new bugs.

Also MW2:Mercenaries is a standalone game. MW2 and MW2: Ghost bears legacy are linked. The Pentium editions and such should all have 3DFX support out of the box. Not sure if it'll work on a V3, MW2 was one of the original Glide games. Never tried.

It doesn't. "Pentium edition" predates 3dfx releases by quite a while (1995), and the 3dfx OEM version that came with some V1 cards are known to be very stubborn about any newer Voodoo card.

Mercenaries is considered a separate, stand-alone game. It's basically the MW2 team wanting to make Mechwarrior 3 but prohibited from doing that with the license, so it comes off marketed as an add-on component. It's obvious they wanted to move forward with the license and they just got stuck cosmetically reiterating the original games (in compatibility breaking, YMMV ways on anything after 1996).

So basically stick with the Titanium edition only?

Aslong youre not planning to play MP...but is it still running? So yeah for the SP Expirience its the best compatible edition. But as always
when games released in different editions there are some downs too..as far i remember it had "improved" textures which could be weird looking. But just a memory maybe a false one.

Thanks all for your inputs, but this has all the looks of a major "rabbit hole" of which I will stay clear. Perhaps down the road
if I build a voodoo 1 centric system this would be worth it however there's also the price gouging going on with these games.

For the record MW3 runs great on my P3 system with the voodoo3, no issues. I suck at it though so turning on "invincibility"
is a definite must! 😁😁😁

Who hath awoken me from my slumber with this mech-posting.

MW2 DOS will run fine on your win98 P3 (discs are sometimes labelled IBM version)
MW2 "Pentium"/Win95 should do also.
I'd take leileilol's advisement against using a Voodoo3 for the 3Dfx version. I haven't actually tried that one since 1990-something.
MW2 Mercs would run fine under either DOS (up to 1.05 or 1.06) or win98 on your P3. 1.1 is the 3D accelerated patch for Mercs and should also work.
I never acquired the MW2 Battlepack, but that was apparently MW2 & GBL on the Mercs 1.0x engine. It doesn't include a 3D accelerated version like the TTT below. But is probably clunky.
Titanium Trilogy is MW2, GBL and Merc all on the Mercs 1.1 engine and should also work, but MW2/GBL are a bit clunky on this version.
