Is there a timedemo available in any version of Unreal prior to Gold? Or even just an FPS counter?

On old macversions there had to be a "timedemo.u" file in the system-folder in oder to get the fps visable.
Perhaps this works on old pc-versions too.

Or even just an FPS counter?

Console => Stat fps

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Thanks guys, trying to find a way to benchmark Unreal with a Matrox M3D. The stat FPS helps a bit.

There was a timedemo developed for Unreal after it was released. You can find it on this page (timedemo02.zip):

It is very similar to the one that was later included in a patch.

Success!

Averaging 37fps on a K6-3@450Mhz with a Matrox m3D. @512x384x24bpp

10fps lower than my Voodoo2 in the same system at same resolution in Unreal Gold. No surprise but glad I’m able to measure both!
