Previously, I was able to use the K-Lite codec pack to view videos through the feature connector on a video card in windows 98.

Now Windows Media Player doesn't play them properly (any other non-monitor display only shows the magic pink overlay color) or even detect the MP4 codec (i.e. "error downloading codec").

I did set the installation to "Set file associations for: Windows Media Player" (NOT Classic!)

Huh, seems I was hasty again. Microsoft didn't just provide video card drivers from other companies. They also seemed to add DirectX/DirectDraw support for those cards. (Which explains partly how the video image was not being drawn. S3's original driver does not have support for DirectX, cause it wasn't popularized until later.)

Even so, I couldn't get the system to recognize the MP4 codec...
