hello all

i am currently working on my 486 build and when trying to use the lastest version of quicktime in windows 3.11, it hangs and crashes

when double click on anything that quicktime (quick time program itself, loading .mov file and even when trying the control panel options), it looks like it loading but nothing happens

when press ctrl alt del, i get a blue screen with options to close the program etc and when do that or just exit that, the system freezes and only way is to hard reset or ctrll, alt, del twice

i had never got this to work on any builds with windows 3.11

I never found QT to be reliable on Win3.x way back when at all and just gave up on it.

Hi, you can try to configure QT in Control Panel.
QT supports many video output methods..
Maybe the detection went wrong somehow.

Hm. Well, maybe you can install and configure it in DOSBox (with Windows 3.1x).
Here, you can configure it for a safe output method and aferwards, copy over the config file to your old pc (or settings stored in win.ini etc).
It's just an idea, if course. Not sure what causes the crash.
If you don't need the latest features, you can also give QuickTime 1.x a try.

Edit : Maybe I just overcomplicate things.
Try changing Windows to use tge plain 16c VGA driver in 640x480 pels and see if QuickTime runs.
If it doesn't, the issue must have an other origin.
Back in the day, QT 2.x worked just fine in Standard VGA.

thank you and i try a different version of drivers for the card i was using which was an s3 virge dx - 4mb and same thing

i did try another card - the one that came with pc - which is diamond Stealth 64 DRAM T pci and that works fine

i am guessing the virge is maybe too "new" for quicktime to work under windows 3.11 but from windows 95 onwards no issues

Back in the day I remember that Cirrus cards and drivers are the best and most compatible for Windows 3.1x and Video for Windows and Quicktime.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

CL-GD5420 series minimum. But better search CL-GD5430 series. CL-GD5440 series is overkill for 486.

I have 5429 ISA and 5436 PCI and 5446 PCI both are excellent cards. And few machines with integrated controllers.

ok will have a look out as some old fmv games that run on this machine, does stuggle with video streaming and/or frame skipping and specs wise for those games is well above the what is needs and the min specs

Hi, that sounds good. 👍
QT supports ATI, Cirrus, Tseng natively, I think.
