Hi, I have problem with keyboard in System Shock 1 on my Socket 7 system with Pentium MMX 233 MHz. So when I press caps lock or other switch keys like num lock or scroll lock it freezes my keyboard, game is still running but keyboard isn't responding to any of my input. I already have ruled out keyboard, because I checked with different keyboard, same result, updated the bios, no change, change every setting in BIOS, or I think at least every setting. Now I don't know what can be source of this problem, it could be motherboard, but I don't know. Also in other games those lock keys work without problem but lights for responding lock keys doesn't turn on. So if anyone has any idea what could be happening please share.

PS: Sorry for bad English, it's not my native language.
PS2: Also it's my first post on vogons forums so don't be harsh if I did something wrong.

Thanks,

One thought: are the keyboards you tried USB? I have noticed similar issues myself when using USB keyboards with my Pentium 3, pressing caps lock pauses whatever I'm doing for an instant. This does not happen when I use PS2 keyboards, so you might want to try that.

Nope, the keyboards I use are all PS/2. I don't know if that helps but motherboard is using din connector for keyboard. One keyboard I use has native din connector, and second keyboard I used adapter from PS/2 to DIN. Also my motherboard supports USB keyboards but I don't have a USB bracket with USB header that fits, because motherboard has extra pin, and didn't want to cut that pin.

So, quick update. Problem seems to be software based, because I tried playing SShock on Win95. Btw. I have dual boot setup with plop boot manager and I have one drive for MS-DOS 6.22 and second drive for Windows 95 OSR 2.5. So playing in Win95 caps lock doesn't freeze keyboard, it even works how it supposed to, meaning it changes character movement speed. So my question is, why is it not working on MS-DOS 6.22 ? I have no idea why is that, but at least I have found a way to play without any problems, but still I would want to play DOS games only on DOS 6.22, not on Win95. So if anyone has any idea please share.

So, I have found a solution. Problem was finally motherboard. I don't know if it was chipset which was at fault but using different motherboard fixed the issue. Motherboard with that problem is Gigabyte GA-586S2 with SIS 5582 chipset. Now I will use Gigabyte GA-586ATX with Intel 486TX chipset. So if anyone has similar problem on this GA-586S2 motherboard, it's motherboard fault not software or other. Anyway, thanks for the tips.
