Try to boot the real pc clean, bypassing config.sys & autoexec.bat to see if the issue persists

my autoexec.bat
@ECHO OFF
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:banana /L:D
SET CTSYN=C:\DOS
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6
SET PATH=C:\DOS;C:\DN
C:\DOS\SBEINIT.COM

my config.sys
DOS=HIGH, UMB
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM
DEVICE=C:\DOS\CD1.SYS /D:BANANA
FILES=50
BUFFERS=30
STACKS=9,256

Is it that VBE3.0 killing EGA fonts on newer >98 video cards bug?

This issue is related to the 8x14 font which was removed on certain video cards as a way of freeing up space for VBE BIOS implementations. The S3 Virge/DX that you mentioned likely have a VBE 2.0 BIOS implementation (which lacks these fonts) instead of the more common VBE 1.2 BIOS.

For these cards you must use a TSR such as FIX8X14 as a workaround. Here is the link for the TSR: https://www.bttr-software.de/products/fix8x14/

@Gmlb256 - initially i wanted to thank you because it seemed that your link fixed my "garbage fonts", but they came back very soon. The gpu is S3 Trio 2D/3D 4mb btw

Anyway, what finally resolved corputed fonts wac getting the "Fonts" folder from C:Windows of another w98 installation and replacing mine, simply offloading the files while disk is connected to a different machine.

Cheers

The utility that I linked (works well with the S3 Trio3D/2X video card) only addresses the issue with the EGA 8x14 font which some DOS programs used. The problem that you had was unrelated considering that making changes to the "Fonts" folder located in C:\WINDOWS fixed it.
