I've finished building a Pentium 3 550E, and I'm finishing a pentium 4 3.2Ghz (478), wanted suggestions about apps and games I should have on them, I'm open to trying new things.

Since this list will help others, I believe we should keep an organization by avoiding repeating what has already been said, and formatting suggestions like this:

P3 Apps:
- App A
- App B
- App C
P4 Apps:
- App A
- App B

P3 Games:
- Game A
- Game B
- Game C
P4 Games
- Game A
- Game B

what would you first suggestions be? I'm sure others would then think of their alternatives

there will be app crossover between the two, as many applications dont 'need' more cpu power or win xp specifically and will work fine on both

the P3 assuming 3d card has a nuce Unreal, Quake2, Half life feel to it!
the p4 assuming good graphics card could be good for far cry and gta sa

as for apps - always a bunch of utilities (compressione etc) and a pds reader, a better than default browser (not for online, but as html reader)

Generally the first apps I move to a retro PC:

- Total Commander
- IrfanView
- Fraps
- Metropolis Launcer (XP/Vista)
- 7Zip
- PowerISO
- Notepad++
- UltraVNC
- Norton Commander (Win9x and older)
- Firefox

I'm separating my computers by epoch, so anything that fits the right time of a P3 550E (early 2000) or a P4 3.2ghz (mid 2004)

The pentium 3 currently has an mx4000 crap, which I will be replacing with a Gf4Ti soon. The P4 has a radeon 3850 AGP that will definitely stay on it when I get it fixed.

When you say App's do you mean period that was installed on just about every PC at the time (ie Adobe reader 5 for the P3) or programs that make older OS's easier to use today?
For Win3x I still use Winzip for example for nostalgia, but don't use it on 9x or later.

Yes, the period that was installed on just about every PC at the time

These are amongst the first programs I'd instal on any rig. Fraps is also a good one.
I'd also install WinImage (exact version may differ depending on what I feel like at that moment).

I'd also install at least a couple benchmark programs, perhaps also SuperPi.
And DirectX (exact version depends on its function).

Games, it really depends as I have quite a substantial collection, but games that end up being played a lot are Unreal, Imperialism 2, Zuma and at least ONE version of The Settlers 😜

Whats missing in your collections?
