P.S: I need to find patches for Jane's longbow as it has a very annoying bug with the sound, among other things. I could only find 1.04f but it won't install as it is asking 1.03f to be installed before.(might get gold at some point, but the original is the one I had. That's why I went with it).

1.03f and 1.04f are the Gold version.

A workaround is available for the 3dfx version of Descent II (both the original and D2_3dfx) by simply setting the following environment variable prior: SET FX_GLIDE_SWAPINTERVAL=2

It caps the frame rate to the half of the screen refresh rate. Example: 30 FPS if 60 Hz is set.

Very cool to know, thanks! Can it be capped to the screen refresh rate? I'm planning on revisiting a V5 build soon, will probably try this.

Yes, by setting FX_GLIDE_SWAPINTERVAL environment variable to 1 instead of 2.

I'd actually install the ISA card now.
The SB Pro or Vibra is probably the easiest starter card as creative is the defacto card of this era.
Unlike the Live dos drivers, ISA cards don't need memory managers running so that should sort your USNF issue. Plus the cards resources (IRQ, DMA) should remain the same in both dos and windows.
I suspect the Live is been given one set of resources in pure dos and another in windows which is why games don't work in both.

Done. I get sound in USNF now. Though I get no music in the menu for some reason.

About the free drive space issues - Try a smaller drive, or at least making a smaller partition. 80 gigs is way larger that games from that time ever had reason to expect to deal with, so their free space check routines may handle them incorrectly (and, for example, overflow).

I switched to a 6gb drive. I tried to install on that and I still get the error. is 6gb too big still?

I tried that and I get some "missilng previous files" error. I need to look into this a wee bit deeper, but I don't think this'll do either.

So I feel like there needs to be a bit of a continuation on this thread, since not everything got sorted. If anything, I got a couple more headaches popping up.

For starters lets get the non-working DOS games out of the way. They work on DOSbox, so I decided to quit trying to make them work.

In regards to the problems I had installing the Longbow patches, I did it completely wrong. I had to place the patch in the game folder and launch it from there.

So the new kind of issues I'm having is that I can't get my joysticks to work. I got a sidewinder precision 2 USB and a Genius Flight 2000 F-20 serial (this one, to be exact https://comshop.com.pt/en/others/2108-joystic … -2000-f-20.html).

The issue with the sidewinder is that after I install the driver, in Section 2 "Connection and Test", It asks me to connect the joystick. When I do, after a brief loading, It asks pop in the win98se disc in order to install "hidusb.sys". So I pop it in, but then the window to find the file pops up and tells me that it's not in the specified path. Yes, I did make sure that the path was correct(which is the disc drive). I click ok, but nothing happens. I tried a bunch of other win98se copies I had, and even a winXP one, but no dice. So I'm stuck. If I try to skip the file, the Joystick won't work.

Note that I have the the generic USB driver installed as well as the unofficial SP3

As for the serial joystick, well, Whether I pop it in the motherboard's or the Sound blaster's port, it just does nothing. I am fairly sure I installed the full driver suit for the sound blaster. For the motherboard, not so much.

Non-USB joysticks/gamepads aren't designed for hot-plugging and should be added manually in "Gaming Options".

So you went to get Advance 10T (a pretty rare ISA/Tualatin board) and not only not use it with a proper ISA sound card but eventually just run dosbox there..?
Where is the logic in that? What were you trying to accomplish?

Oh no. I run DOSbox on my modern system. Also I use the ViBRA16 for the ease of use. As far as I know, the likes of SB16 and AWE32 might be a bit complex to set up. BTW The theme of the system is that I build it from salvaged parts that cost me nothing. The board just fell into my possession. I didn't buy it.

The solution to the majority of problems you listed
1. replace Live for Vibra, clean reinstall recommended, USP3 not recommended.
2. make sure sure you load himem and emm386 properly.
3. Use throttle for speed sensitive games.
4. If that doesn't help, use VIAFSB for speed-sensitive games.

SB16 and AWE cards aren't really complex to initialize in DOS.

For PnP variants, CTCM (and AWEUTIL /S for AWE cards) in AUTOEXEC.BAT is enough, the rest that gets added in CONFIG.SYS is totally unnecessary and wastes memory. On Windows, it is much simpler to configure the resources thru Device Manager provided that the proper drivers are installed.

all of those isa soundcards are probably worth repairing except the als120. very, very nice dumpster finds.

running dual pci and isa soundcards is very common around here as they compliment each other nicely in a win9x or dos dual boot system. you should try unisound.com (which i believe supports all of your isa cards and is distributed here on vogons) to handle the dos side of things for sound. it is a god send to a lot of people.

I assume you mean "game controllers". I tried that, but I get an error that Game port or gameport drivers are missing. Note that I got 3 different game ports. The motherboard's, the Sound blaster's and the Vibra's. Though I installed drivers for the cards, I am not really sure if game port functionality is included in those drivers.

1. I got both plugged in. And I use them separately when needed, though it seems there's some conflict where Descent 2 is concerned
2. I am using Phil's easy Dos guide, which allows me to choose presets for booting into DOS, including expanded memory. I need some elaboration on himem and emm386. Is it something additional or something I need to do instead?
3+4. So far, the only game I had speed issues with, was Descent II, and that was fixed with the 1.2 patch.
