Do you guys recommend me installing DirectX onto this OS? If so, which version?
Thanks!

Depends on your video card. I usually go with DirectX 7 but for GeForce 2/3/4 or Radeon 9x00 you probably want 8.0.

[Install Win95 like you were born in 1985!] on systems like this or this.

This brings back memories. I had a Trident 9440 PCI video card in my very first PC.

For that video card, DirectX since 5.x provides its own driver that could pretty much supersede the one you'd install from the driver disk.

Similarly, as later Windows (98/Me) already comes with newer DirectX (around 6.x to 7.x), the video card worked out-of-box there.

So yes, it's recommended to install DirectX, though which version to use (up to 8.0) depends on the game you'd like to run.

Mostly DOS based games, and very few Windows 95 specific ones, I am really trying to elevate/update the DX infrastructure of the OS more than anything else.

I normally install the latest that the OS can handle. So, 8.0 for Win95. If you've never installed DirectX on the machine before, you might need to install dcom95 first as a prerequisite.

DCOM is required by DirectX 8.0, but not by 7.0.

With your card and intentions, 7.0 should be fine.
