I just followed this method to install a SB0220 in a Slot1 system with W98. I did so without installing DirectX9 and can confirm it works without any problem whatsoever.

Cheers, thanks for testing this.

The only reason I'm including DirectX 9 is because Creative has it as a requirement on the Audigy 2 ZS driver CD, which my guide is based on. It's entirely possible that the drivers don't actually need it, or that it's only used by one of Creative's accompanying utilities like EAX Console or something. Since there is no way to tell for sure, I kept Creative's DirectX 9 requirement just to be on the safe side.

No.

To the best of my knowledge, it's not possible to install VxD drivers on an NT-based operating system. Same goes for the DOS driver support pack.

Is this in a game or does it also happen when you use the speaker test as described in step 4.5?

If it's the latter, maybe something needs to be tweaked on the hardware side of your setup. There's nothing special that needs to be done in software, other than adjusting the volume sliders.

Phil based his video on a slightly older version of this guide, but it should work similarly. He did repack the driver files in order to streamline things a bit though.

You might still want to use my current guide, since I've added some new features in the meantime. If you do, make sure to follow all the steps precisely, including doing a clean install of Win98SE beforehand.

Okay thanks, also the problem was me, I hadn't installed graphics drivers so I had a problem with viewing the mixer tab as it didn't fit on screen.
Now I have i turned up the right volumes to max and it's good and muted the other analogue stuff.

I'd rather not, since I prefer to keep things as stock as possible. If this is too difficult to follow, stay with Phil's version. You only lose access to some of the Creative utilities that I added in the new release, but the basic functionality is still there. I guess you could ask Phil to revise his version according to my latest update.

Lastly, I have one more thing to add. I originally created this guide for my own personal use, and only decided to post it publicly after realizing that other people may find it helpful as well. I tried to be very thorough with the instructions, but it's simply not possible to account for every single issue that one might encounter during the install process, since everyone's system is different. Therefore, I have now added a "Disclaimer" section to clarify some things.

In summary, if the guide works for someone, that's great. But if not, I want to make it clear that people shouldn't expect any further help or troubleshooting assistance from me. And while I may occasionally offer a few tips here and there, please do not assume that this guide has any level of technical support.

Hello Sir Joestar,

once again I am at the point where I am ready to install your drivers (yes it did work before when I did it).
I am on fresh windows 98SE again, but last time when I used philscomputerlab pack of your drivers where he makes nice numbered folders to click setup inside)
now the last fresh win98 where i did this, I had done rudy's patchmem and had 4gb of memory slotted and everything worked good.
UNTIL, I got to folder 5 (the dos drivers), and i installed that and the next reboot into windows 98 it gave error about not having enough memory to load winderrs 98.
So I had to take out 3 sticks of 1gb memory and just go back down to 1gb for it to boot into winderrs 98 again.
Are you aware of this issue and do your new drivers (without cool numbered folders) address this issue?
Yes, I am still too lazy to read, sorry.

you should try installing the tweaks from unoffical sp 2.1 just the tweaks if you have that much ram.

While RLoew's patch can indeed make Win98 work with more than 512 MB, it doesn't necessarily mean that every program/driver/game will function with a larger amount of memory being available.

Fortunately, Microsoft was aware of this issue and made a relatively simple way of limiting the maximum memory amount that is available to applications. Go to Start > Run > type msconfig > Advanced > tick the "Limit memory to" checkbox and type in 512 MB for the amount. Then reboot the system when prompted and you should be good to go.

nothing good but the tweaks are rather harmless you can apply them by hand. the dma buffer tweak would probably fix your problem.

SYSTEM.INI tweaks:

DMABufferSize=64 - To increase your 16-bit Direct Memory Access (DMA) channel buffer to maximum size: 64 (in KiloBytes). Affects ALL I/O (Input/Output) DMA operations: sound card FM/wavetable, MIDI playback/recording, disk buffered reads/writes. Default value is 16.
MinSPs=8 - To increase the spare stack pages, to prevent possible stack fault situations. Default value is 2.

Registry tweaks:

Disable Screen Saver When Disk Defragmenter Active - If the screen saver becomes active while using the disk defragmenter it can slow and interrupt the process. This tweak disables the screen saver when defrag is being used.

I have heard nothing but bad experiences from users of this forum who have tried that pack. If you do a forum search for "unofficial service pack" you'll quickly see what I mean. This is why I specifically warn people against installing it in my guide.

However, like Warlord said, installing only a limited amount of tweaks (and not the whole pack) might be less problematic. I would still caution against messing with that thing unless you absolutely need to.

P.S.

Win98 era games and software will not benefit from having more than 512 MB RAM installed. Unless you're planning to dual-boot Win98 with another OS like WinXP, which can utilize more RAM, it might be best to physically remove the extra sticks and only leave 512 MB in your machine.

It is 3.x that is rotten, 2.1 is the good one that won't cause bunch of issues from being a mismash of newer DLLs that often break something.

oh thanks for the msconfig advice, it didn't work with 4gb installed to get past the not enough memory message booting into win98 but it works really good to limit it to 512mb when i have patchmem working and using 4gb of memory.
so i couldn't get your soundcard drivers working with 4gb of memory installed, but i i have a abit av8 machine with 1gb of memory and i got it working perfectly well on that.
it's so awesome, thanks.
