I want to buy a sound card for this board. DOS compatibility is my main concern, then the extra functions in Win98 (A3D/EAX).

I had a ymf724 before, but the SB Pro emulation didn't work in DOS. So I sold the card. However I really love its XG MIDI sound, not to mention its genuine OPL3 FM. I'm wondering if those ymf744/754 have any chance to work with this board?

Beside the ymf series, I heard that the ESS Solo-1 is very compatible with DOS games. Then I found this topic.

I also found another topic discussing Aureal Vortex 2 and this board. It seems the DOS compatibility is okay, but A3D has issues with this board in Win98. Its FM synth is also not good enough.

So what would be the best choice?

My train of thought (priority in order):
First, it has to at least WORK both in DOS and Win98. By saying WORK in DOS, I mean to have MIDI sound(synth) and digital sound(SB emu) in as many as possible games (maybe from 1990-2002).
Second, better to have a good synth(OPL3/ESFM).
Third, better to have a good wavetable sound (something like XG MIDI), to have a wavetable header is also acceptable. To get a good waveblaster daughter card with reasonable price is quite hard in my country though.
To fulfill the above conditions is almost perfect to me. If the card has the ability to support A3d or EAX, that's extra benefit. (So cards like SB Live! and Audigy 2 take very low priority.)

Go with the card with the real OPL chip. The OPTi LS chip is also very good.

The CUSL2-C doesn't have any ISA slot. My choice is limited to PCI or CNR.

I got one of these last year for less £10.00 after someone mentioned it on this forum. Haven't tested it myself yet

In that thread, it says:

# NOT work
Intel i810
Intel i815 (tested by NOG)

The CUSL2-C has got an i815 chipset.

I'd go with Sound Blaster Live! for this motherboard. Even if this is a mediocre choice, I think most other cards would be even worse for the purpose of DOS-gaming, and for Windows 98, it is superb. Other choices might give you real OPL, but a lot worse Sound Blaster emulation.

Thanks for your advice. I've manage to get YMF724 cards working. I think they are the best choice once they work.
