I am seeking some advice/opinions on this...

Would it be worthwhile to consider acquiring the SC88 Pro or would that be mostly redundant since I already have the SC-88 VL?

Also, one thing that concerns me is that these larger sound modules often have the power supply *inside* the unit itself. I would much rather have an external power supply so if a power surge kills the power supply it is easy to replace. I would imagine that finding a replacement internal power supply for these older sound modules would not be easy.

Not much point to getting a Pro unless you are actually going to make music on it.
I think you will have a lot more fun if you look at modules from other companies as they truly
sound different. Some good choices would be Akai SG01k, Casio GZ-50M, Kawai GMega

Thanks for the feedback on that. I had a feeling that it would not be wise to look into getting the SC-88 Pro so it looks like my assumptions were correct.

Actually, I am already looking into sound modules from other manufacturers and right now the Akai SG01k looks like it will be the first non Roland/Yamaha product I will be getting. It definitely has a different sound than the Roland and Yamaha units and after listening to several demos of it on youtube I like how it performs. I just wish it had a cool and informative LCD screen on it. 🤣

Yeah, the Akai's 3 digit digital clock style display and total of 7 buttons on the front make it a nightmare to make music on, even with the manual it's a pain. Not an issue as a play-back device though. Considering it's poor user interface and the fact that it and it's two sisters (SG01v, SG01p) only had about a 3 year lifespan tells me they were meant more as demo units for Akai's very popular Samplers.
