I recently acquired a Compaq Presario SR2038X, a very nostalgic machine to me. I'm making it into a decent XP gaming machine. I went all out with the graphics card, a GT 710. While the machine works fine, after upgrading to SP3, my Realtek audio stopped working. I reinstalled the drivers, tried the KB888111 trick, and even uninstalled NVIDIA high-def audio... all to no avail.

What could possibly cause the audio to just disappear? In Device Manager, there is an "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" but installing the Realtek drivers doesn't change it at all, since it is NVIDIA high-def audio. The Realtek doesn't even show up as a device without a driver. The audio worked fine before I installed SP3. I did remove a WiFi card and install a graphics card, but if I had damaged the audio portion of the board, the board would be entirely dead, so I can't conclude it as a hardware issue just yet. Anyone know what could cause SP3 to break my audio?

Nevermind, I resolved the issue. Onboard Audio was set to AUTO in the BIOS. I set it to ENABLED and now it works!
