Just wanted to add my experience to this thread.

I originally got an later Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI (CT4810) card with the CT5880 chip
- CD Has Drivers for later windows but not 3.1
- The 7501748.exe drivers give the "no card detected" message
- The older Watler's drivers (crea1371.dll) didn't work, It had a device selection and none of the options seemed to do anything
- The newer Watler's drivers (CT137X.dll) worked (wav only) but the sound goes strange after a while http://turkeys4me.byethost4.com/programs/index.htm

I purchased an older Ensoniq AudioPCI with the ES1370 chip
- The 7501748.exe drivers installs fine and works great

Also I found that a driver CD got posted to archive.org
https://archive.org/details/ensoniq-audiopci-drivers
I haven't tried it but it might be an easier way to get the drivers installed

Playing with the Aureal Vortex 1 (AU8820), it does work just fine in DOS and Windows 3.1x, however adjusting the sound can be a little tedious.
I think in theory, for DOS, settings are supposed to pull from vortex.ini, but perhaps if you replace asp4dos.com with the newer version, that doesn't work, not sure.
However, I found a DOS mixer that works with SB compatible soundcards and also works with this card called SBMIX: https://www.bttr-software.de/products/sbmix/
Example usage:

sbmix 15 /w15,15 /f15,15 /c15,15

For Win3.1X, the best I can tell, there is no GUI for the mixer (you'll notice that an "Aureal Vortex Mixer" driver is installed when you install the Win3.1 drivers)
However, there are settings in C:\windows\system.ini that you can change under [Config\MixerSettings]
To get max volume, I just changed all values that were 32767 to 65535 (items like VolLineOutLeft, VolLineOutRightt, etc.) When done, it looked like this for me:

[Config\MixerSettings]
VolLineOutLeft=65535
VolLineOutRightt=65535
VolMonoOutLeft=65535
VolMonoOutRightt=65535
VolLTelphone=65535
VolLVideoLeft=0
VolLVideoRight=0
VolLWtLeft=65535
VolLWtRight=65535
VolLWaveLeft=65535
VolLWaveRight=65535
VolLMic=0
VolLLineLeft=0
VolLLineRight=0
VolLCDLeft=65535
VolLCDRight=65535
VolLAuxLeft=0
VolLAuxRight=0
VolWTelephone=0
VolWMic=0
VolWLeinLeft=0
VolWLineRight=0
VolWCDLeft=65535
VolWCDRight=65535
VolWVideoLeft=0
VolWVideoRight=0
VolWAuxLeft=0
VolWAuxRight=0
VolWMixStereoLeft=0
VolWMixStereoRight=0
VolWMixMono=0
VolVMic=0
VolVLineLeft=0
VolVLineRight=0
SelectMonoOutMicMix=0
OnOff20dBBoost=1
OnoffToneLineOut=0
BassLineOut=1
TrebleLineOut=1
MuteLWt=0
MuteLWave=0
MuteLMic=0
MuteLLine=0
MuteLCD=0
MuteLVideo=0
MuteLAux=0
MuteLineOut=0
MuteMonoOut=0
MuxWaveIn=1
MuxVoiceIn=0
MuxLineOut=503

And of course, Windows will unload the asp4dos DOS driver on launch which is annoying, so you need to reload it when you exit Windows and reset the sound levels. SMH. So I moved C:\windows\win.com to be C:\windows\wincom.com and created a C:\windows\win.bat with these contents:

@echo off
C:\windows\asp4dos.com -u
C:\windows\wincom.com
LH C:\windows\asp4dos.com
C:\sbmix 15 /W15,15 /F15,15 /C15,15

Hope that this helps someone! Especially since the Vortex 1 is cheap!!!

As I mentioned earlier, I believe the Ensoniq AudioPCI cards are the way to go. Creative bought out Ensoniq and used their cards as the basis for the PCI Sound Blaster line, but apparently the drivers are not as good.

I bought one of those audiopci cards got the dos drivers and if it did not reboot, it gave a emm386 has halted your computer to prevent damage press any key to reboot, of course if I could find the "any key" I would press it, no but seriously pressing any key does nothing as the computer is locked up.

I put the sb live card back in and at least it initializes in dos but windows wfw sb 1.o nor sb 1.5 will load as not one of the ports nor irq matches the card.

I think I figured why, I have on board sound and the sb live pci card, I can turn off the onboard sound in the bios, but it is still being detected by windows and is why I am getting port setting not matching,

I saw an ess solo card mentioned that has dos and win 3x drivers but will it work in my system, the cheapest one on ebay is right at 50.00 most of the others are 81.00 plus 51.00 shipping, I am not paying that just to find out it won't work either.

At least the cd music works in wfw

Sorry to hear your having problems like that.

All of the Ensoniq Audio PCI cards will work with Dos 6.22 & Win3.11 with the right drivers.
As for EMM386 having problems, IIRC, you may not be able to use EMS memory while loading the drivers for it (I could be wrong).

I have 3 ESS PCI sound cards sitting around that I'm not using.
One with the ES1370 chip.
One with the ES1371 chip.
One with the ES1373 chip.

I know at one point I spent time finding drivers for the one with ES1373 for (dos6.22 & win3.11) and it all worked.
I believe these were the drivers I used:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bdF-KDRBQz0q … iew?usp=sharing

I'm happy to send you all 3 sound cards for free (you just pay shipping).

You have to be good with editing your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat, otherwise you won't be properly checking all the drivers correctly. Some may need custom/manual editing in those boot files.

These are the three cards I have.

These do not work on ALI5 Chipset with the regualr drivers, but they do work with sbemu.

I'm using an Ali chipset.
Got them working on my P5A and my GA-5AX.

Interesting, did not work for me. Everything seems to be fine, but I hear nothing with the normal drivers,
either under plain Dos and in Doswindow within Win9x. SBEMU for plain Dos works fine though.

If interested, you should try the drivers and instructions I just updated the original post with on page 1.
I went through a lot of trial and error for them. Just note that those are only "guaranteed" to work with an AudioPCI with the "ES1373" chip. Not ES1370 or ES1371. Those would require different drivers.

Updated original post in case it helps anyone.

That would be great, thank you so much.

I have to wait until the 3rd, and I will post back that I have the money for the shipping, if I can get one going in dos 6.22, wfw I would be happy to return the other two, so that someone else having issues might also benefit.

Keep me posted, as they may be gone by then.

What chip does yours have on it? 1370, 1371, 1373?

Because I am always using multiboot I have to stick to cards that are compatible.
- 1370 does not work in amithlon, 1371/1373 do work with native support with the original kernel.
- 1371/1373 did not work for me in plain dos and win9x doswindow/fullscreen (SBEMU works for real dos) on my Scovery 211/212 ALI5 Chipset (the only PCI soundcrd that workd was ESS-SOLO1 PCI on that machine, every other card was correctly installed but muted)
- 1371/1373 did not work for me in OS/2 Warp4, but there was a driver for 1371 that should work in OS/2 but is not supported in Win/OS2.
- Never tested Win3x on it.

In short:
- I will test your dos-driver for 1373 if this works at all and if it's better than SBEMU at current state
- I don't think SBEMU will work with the win3x-driver but I will test this too.
- A working solution for win9x doswindow/fullscreen would be pretty nice, I already tested several different drivers, none worked. Seemed to be that it is the same issue like in plain dos.

I have:
1. CT4810 Chip>CT5880-DCQ
2. CT4810 Chip> CT2518-DBQ
3. CT4750 Chip>CT5880-DCQ
4. AUDIO Chip>ES1370

To my research CT2518 is the ES1373.

I'll make a test.

I use a multiboot as well.
I think multi-OS compatibility is one of the main reasons a lot of people have searched for drivers for this sound card (aside from it being cheap and easy to find compared to SB16, 32 and 64's)

The only chip that I have experience making work across all the OS's in my picture is the ES1373.

You are right there is more to this. I think I overlooked some fine detail on this.
CT4810/4570 are different to the card you mentioned. It's CT5803 ...
I made a purchase of five and I will make the tests you mentioned.

Did you really get these cards working in OS2/Warp4 and WinOS2?

My multiboots are:
- OS2/WARP4 including WinOS2
- MSDOS/WIN3x and AMITHLON
- WIN95/WIN2K
- LINUX

I recently pulled the trigger on an Avance Logic ALS4000. The Windows 3.1 driver works great; however, the card plays audio about 15 cents too sharp regardless of the operating system. It drives me a little bit crazy.

I rechecked my equipent and I found such a card. Put it in the machine, installed the software,
everything seems to be fine...but I can't hear a thing. Sound is muted...rechecking my against
your drivers...
