So the orginal power supply makes a noise so I'm thinking a new one would not be hurt.
Found this one but have a hard time fining info on compatibility.

That's the correct one. It can deliver 2A, but your SC55 is rated only 500mA, max.
Voltage and polarity is also right, should fit and work!

It's more the size of the barrel I worry about. Or is that a standard Roland uses for all of thire devices?
I use this one for my Roland SC-155.
Not sure about barrel sizes, or if they vary between devices.

I will test the volume dial thing you noticed when I get home.
Seems humming noise from the power adapter is normal, in general. A more quiet version would be prefers tho. As this is for desktop use.
I do use headphones, so I don't hear it. But anyway.
I replaced it with non-official ones that meets the specs, for MT-32 and SC-55 and any other old synth that has a noisy old power supply.
From memory, almost all MIDI modules use the same barrel, or very very close to. Certainly Roland modules all use the same size from my experience. Of course some use different kinds of supplies later on.

Looking at other stores for the same power supply as in the first post, they had a better list of compatible devices and the sc-55 is supported.
Power supply for BOSS guitar pedals should work. Those you get brand new. Just make sure they can deliver enough amp. There is also one called Roland PSB which will work with anything up to 2 amps.
