I bought a sound card advertised as an (or just having) Opti 82c94 Crystal CS 4231A-KL. I got it because of its proper opl3 chip and it was £13.50. I put it in my 386SX and I'll use it for early 90s DOS gaming.

I don't get sound and assume I need some drivers or at least some configuring. Do I need drivers for both, Opti and Crystal chips? Or is Crystal the "card manufacturer" I see the Vogons library has a similar crystal driver 4235... Will that work with my card?

Hi, are you sure it isn't Opti 82C924 ? I've seen quite a few such cards at PC-Schnulli.de.
Mst of them are also paired with an AD 1845 or CS4231A companion chip.

Hi yes you're right it's a 82C924. I'll have a look at that list of cards and see if anything looks familiar!

Are there generic drivers I can use?

Hi, I don't know of any generic drivers, but I'd try the driver for the Typhoon Media Sound Advanced 16 bit.
That model contains both an Opti 82C924 and a CS4231A or AD1845JP, so the driver should work fine with it.

(Even if your card and the Typhoon card would do contain an EPROM which has stored information for ISA Plug&Play
that's different, there's nothing really on each of the cards that would prevent them to work with each one's driver.
Except if the driver in question was especially coded to refuse to work with a soundcard made by another manufacturer.)

The package contains device drivers for DOS/Win3.1 and Windows 95 (Win9x).

thanks for your help. I've copied a few drivers that have both CS4131A-KL and Opti 82C924 onto my CF card. This is a very basic question but what does my autoexec.bat need to look like? At the moment it is (after keyboard language etc):

SET SOUND=C:\DOS\DRIVERS\TYPHOO~1
SETBLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6

Where the drivers I extracted from the folder are located in Typhoo~1.

Annoyingly I can't look at / set irq's or anything in the BIOS! there is no menu for that at all!
