I've recently bought a Korg NS5R, and I'd like to get a Dreamblaster X2 for it.

I plan on playing mostly retro games, rather than music production.

They offer up three different types of Soundbanks.

Which one is best suited for gaming?

I'm more than happy to update the device with the different soundbanks myself, rather than paying extra.

Also, are there other soundbanks that I might be better of using with it?

Thanks for any help!

Hm, this is confusing.

I mean, Dreamblaster X2 is meant to accept new soundbanks via USB. There is an official tool for that and all the banks are available for download. That is like one of the biggest features of the card to me.

You just get a modern Windows machine, download the official tool, connect X2 over USB and flash the new soundbank and preset. No special equipment/knowledge required — except for a regular mini USB cable.

I don't think there is anything wrong with charging customers for preloading soundfonts, but it's just... weird?

Hey, thanks for the advice to RetroNoob
all is correct, and well explained !

All banks are available for free download, so you can update it yourselves easily.
I currently preload all board in my stock with the dream bank, so uploading a different bank to it, means extra work for me.
To avoid this extra work (I rather work on new projects 😉), i charge a small fee if you want me to do it.
So this encourages you to upload any bank you want, yourselves, and play with the presets.

Oh
the safe choice is the dream bank, this is well balanced, but it can sound a bit clean/generic.

Personally i would advise to try the new buran bank, combined with the appiah4 preset
It takes more risks, and will blow you out of your socks for some game soundtracks 😀

as jheronimus said, you can upload it yourself, so you can swap out if you like to try something else

Hey, just my 2 cents: I don't think your product page explicitly mentions that you can load soundfonts into X2. Sure, it has:

- 64mbyte flash for soundbank data

- DreamBlaster Preset editor / USB uploader tool for advanced customization/tweaking.

But I don't think it states something like "you can upload soundfonts into the device" anywhere on the page. And this is a big thing, actually, even if there are only 6 soundfonts available.

Personally, I know about this feature because I followed your threads on Vogons. So maybe for someone outside of the forum the description is not clear enough, given that most daughterboards can't do custom soundfonts.
