Aureal3D is a game changing experience for late 90s 3D games and a technology I completely missed out on because I never heard about it; I went straight from an SB16 to an SB Live! Value and positional 3D audio was mostly a gimmick to me as far as I was concerned.

Then I started this hobby a couple years back and one day managed to grab a Monster Sound MX300..

There are a lot of Non-Aureal chipsets that claim to support A3D. I was wondering how much of this claimed support is hardware vs software, how much of it is accurate and exactly how accurate.. Are there any chipsets that do A3D particularly well?

I am asking because there are chipsets out there with support for both A3D and EAX and I am wondering how much of a real value proposition this actually is..

A3D 1.0 is pretty simple and most cards that offer implementation do a decent job. A3D 2.0 however... you can pretty much forget it, it's Aureal or bust, unless something has changed in recent years.
