This isn't exactly a retro laptop. In fact, it isn't even a proper laptop. However, I'm running Windows XP on it so I'm hoping someone might be able to help me.

I purchased a 2011 HP 6360t Mobile Thin Client last year and immediately replaced the 4GB SDD with a 120 GB HDD to make the thin client more usable as a cheap laptop for Windows 7. I've now decided that I want to run XP on it, but there's one missing device driver that's holding me back. I have absolutely no idea what sound chip is in this thing. HP's documentation simply states "HD Audio" which is incredibly vague. Since this thin client is basically an HP Probook 6360b without the webcam and Core i5, I've been downloading my drivers for that model. Sure enough, the graphics, ethernet, and WiFi drivers work fine, but the sound drivers refuse to install because they aren't detecting an IDT HD Audio CODEC device. I've tried multiple IDT drivers and none of them work. I even tried some Realtek drivers in case that's the "HD Audio" HP was referring to, but that didn't work either. Aside from reinstalling Windows 7 and trying to get info from device manager, I'm not sure what to do. Windows XP drivers have to exist because HP offered Embedded 2009 Standard for this model. Perhaps I could extract the drivers from the 2009 image?

That's the one I already downloaded from HP that didn't work. It doesn't make sense to me because every other device driver for that model worked fine on my 6360t.

Did you tried this?

You could try some software like Driver Booster if you're really lost, they'll attempt to detect the devices and install the missing drivers for you automatically. Some of these utilities are adware supported, but some indeed really work. I have used Driver Booster, DriverMax, and DriverHub (as long as you deny the adware install during setup) in the past. Some work on Windows XP still.

That said, it's not all that hard to learn to do yourself. If you want to learn how to do this manually, in Device Manager you may want to find the Vendor ID and Product ID of the device that has no drivers installed yet, that should give you an idea of what you need to download.

I searched the exact device ID and as it turns out, the driver for the Probook 6360b is correct. For some reason, the installer claims that it can't detect an IDT chip and I can't manually install it either. I know the device is working because I was running Windows 7 on this thin client until yesterday with no sound issues. I'm considering giving up and just reinstall 7 or maybe run Vista for something a little different.

DCG Retrowave, did you tried just extract HP exe file using 7-Zip and install driver manually from WDM folder?

Also sometimes may help drivers from other vendors. Yesterday I installed Windows XP to Dell Inspiron 20 3045 all in one machine, using every drivers from other vendors (wi-fi, audio, video).

I tried all of that. I've spent over 6 hours with this machine already. I've downloaded IDT drivers from Shuttle, HP, Dell, etc. and Windows keeps claiming that the device is not functioning correctly. Extracting the contents of the .exe was one of the first things I tried since Windows told me it wasn't a valid Win32 application. No matter what I try, the audio device won't function in XP. I have over 5 computers running XP already so it's not like I need this to work. I'm looking at reinstalling 7 at this point or maybe giving Vista a try since I currently don't have anything running that.

You should be able to add the device id to the .inf file for the drivers you are trying to use.

My guess is that the .inf file is detecting something else specific or that the ID is slightly different than the one in the .inf file.

The correct ID was in the file. I messed around with it for a few minutes, but nothing worked. I'm okay with giving up 😁

Thanks everyone for the help though!

Well, if it still wouldn't install the driver manually, then something was not correct in the .inf file.

I just finished installing Windows 7 and the exact driver that failed on XP is working. I don't know what the technical reason would be, but for some reason XP just didn't like my hardware and acted like the sound chip was defective.

Which service pack of XP? I have a vague recollection that XP may need an additional driver for HD Audio and indeed Microsoft provide one for SP2: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/8881 … class-driver-ve but this blog post points to possible issues with SP3: https://www.boredsysadmin.com/2008/03/windows … t-hd-audio.html and appears to suggest forcibly installing the 888111 patch for SP2 on SP3.

Ah yeah, I think jtchip is on the right track! I remember that too from back when I was servicing XP PCs. If your XP is, like, no Service Packs or SP1 you may need to install an update like that!

I was running Service Pack 3 and I tried installing all of those updates. Unfortunately the reason I ended up posting about this issue was because every other solution didn't work for me. That's why I reinstalled Windows 7. I spent a full day trying every method I could find and I made no progress. It's no big deal though. I have enough Windows XP computers already 😉
