What is at the other end of the audio cable that is plugged into the Mitsumi card?

Looks to me like there are two cables and one should go to the CD-ROM drive and the other to the sound card.

Because back then some people wanted to have a CD-ROM without also needing a sound card?

The CD-ROM controller interface on CT1740 is for Panasonic/Creative drives, not for Mitsumi.
The analog audio input, however, should also work with a Mitsumi drive - but make sure to check the pinouts, as a different cable may be necessary.

Looks like you are using DMA 5 for both the CD-ROM controller and for the sound card.

so the dma switch on the controller needs to be off or on ?

The CD controller card looks like the DMA jumper is set to 7 which should be fine. Guessing you need some command line switch for the controller driver to specify DMA 7... maybe DMA 5 is default.
