I’d like to run my YMF715 with my SB16 for the bug-free UART and the IDE port for my CD-ROM drive. Is it possible to totally disable its SB support to free up resources?

No, it cannot be disabled without also disabling MPU401, WSS and OPL3 at the same time.

Why not use both and use the better one, as needed, with non-overlapping resource assignments configured ?

That’s what I’ll probably end up doing. If I could get a SB16 and GUS to coexist back in the day, this should be a piece of cake.

I used to have an AWE64 , YMF715 and GUS coexisting, so I concur.

That's exactly what I did with my current retro computer which has 3 ISA sound cards coexisting: SBPro2, AWE64 and GUS. If you're using a joystick/gamepad, disable the gameport of the sound card where it isn't going to be plugged.
