I have very little sources on the Human Machine Interface Sound Operating System library, a few games that I know to use this are:

Windows (look for SOS950n.DLL, where n is a natural number)

  1. Tex Murphy: Overseer
  2. Killing Time
  3. Sonic's Playhouse
  4. Command: Aces of the Deep
  5. Spycraft: The Great Game
  6. Fable

DOS (look for HMIDRV.SYS, HMIDRV.386)

  1. Abuse
  2. Shattered Steel
  3. Drone
  4. MDK
  5. XS
  6. Toonstruck
  7. IndyCar Racing II
  8. Synnergist
  9. Descent
  10. Magic Carpet: The Hidden Worlds
  11. Fort Boyard: Le Défi
  12. Links 386 CD
  13. Metaltech: EarthSiege
  14. Aces of the Deep
  15. Dark Legions
  16. Cyberwar
  17. Hammer of the Gods
  18. vOperation Crusader
  19. The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
  20. X-COM: Apocalypse

Some games that use the HMI sound library:

  • Abuse (1995)
  • Shattered Steel (1996)
  • Drone (1997)
  • MDK (1997): This one doesn't feature the usual sound setup program.

As for the company behind the library, here is an archived link: http://web.archive.org/web/19970225190650/htt … manmachine.com/

Some information about the library here: http://web.archive.org/web/19970225190838/htt … com/dev.htm#sos

Many, many DOS games used the HMI Sound System. Some of them (e.g. Daggerfall, Witchaven) had a HMI branded sound setup screen, which made it easy to identify.

file.php?id=90098&mode=view

Other games used the HMI libraries but had their own custom sound setup screen (e.g. Tomb Raider, Descent, Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Stonekeep etc).

There's a short list on Mobygames but it's far from being compete. Basically, any DOS game which has HMIDRV.386 or HMIDRV.SYS among its files uses the HMI Sound System.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

Okay I probably missed a lot of HMIDRV files in years then 😀

Another thing to notice is the Windows games use sos95xy.dll instead (xy could be 03, 05, atleast that's what I have encountered). The first 3 games in my original list was based on that. I have been unsuccessful to find games using that library.

There is a lot of info compiled by Bristlehog in this thread in Vogons A list of sound engines found in DOS games

But still there is less on HMI... and for Windows games I found no other sources too.

I added 2 more Windows games in this time
